Stožok: Cycling Routes, Nature Conservation and Family Experiences

Stožok combines cycling routes, protected landscapes, family experiences and visible cultural history. The options range from a paved cycling route for less experienced cyclists, through viewpoints and bird and plant protection areas, to a publicly accessible farm park and a sports and recreation complex. The journey can also be arranged in different ways: Stožok is accessible by train, car or bus.

Cycling between Stožok, Javorie and Poľana

Stožok is considered a starting point for marked hiking and cycling routes towards Javorie and Poľana. A circular cycling route starting from Masarykov dvor in Vígľaš-Pstruša passes through Stožok. Separately, the section from Masarykov dvor to Stožok runs along a paved cycle path that is also suitable for less experienced cyclists. A notable point along the route is Zvonička: the bell chapel was built in 1863, renovated in 1993 and stands on the Hontianska Cycling Route.

Nature Reserves and Views

The Pstruša Nature Reserve lies in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Stožok in the Detva District. Covering 7.36 hectares, it protects wet meadow plant communities with a mass occurrence of the endangered and protected snakeshead fritillary, scientifically known as Fritillaria meleagris. At the end of April, the area may appear red with thousands of flowering snakeshead fritillaries. This creates a clear seasonal natural feature alongside the cycling and hiking routes.

The Poľana Bird Protection Area extends across almost the entire municipal territory of Stožok. Significant numbers of protected endangered bird species occur there, including the red-backed shrike, common quail, Eurasian wryneck and middle spotted woodpecker. In the surrounding area, the rocks below Chochuľka offer a south-facing viewpoint overlooking Stožok, the Zvolenská kotlina basin, Javorie and Ostrôžky.

At Rohy, it is important to distinguish between the paths and the protected area: the paths above the nature reserve are used by recreational athletes and hikers, while the Rohy Nature Reserve itself is not accessible to the public for nature conservation reasons. It protects the xerothermic vegetation of the Zvolenská kotlina basin in Stožok, was designated in 1986 and is designated as an area without intervention.

Family Activities and Local Culture

The publicly accessible Farmársky park allows families to come into contact with domestic animals. Visitors can feed, groom and observe horses, goats, geese, ducks, chickens, dogs and cats there. The park also offers interactive and educational quizzes about wildlife and environmental protection. The Stožok sports and recreation complex has a football pitch, a multifunctional court, a beach sports court, bowling, a rope course and a climbing wall. There is also a shelter with a fire pit available for rent.

Cultural points of interest include the Church of the Holy Family. It was built in 2002 and is described by the municipality as a cultural landmark. South of Stožok, approximately 250 metres beyond the Plžíkovci settlement, there is a memorial to the victims of the Second World War. A procession with a holy mass takes place in Stožok in August. For children from Stožok and the neighbouring villages, there is also a forest where they can encounter figures from various fairy tales.
