Horný Tisovník amid forests, folk art and sacred buildings

Horný Tisovník lies in the northwest of Novohrad, southeast below the Javorie Mountains, in the eastern part of the Krupinská vrchovina highlands and in the valley of the Tisovník. Most of the municipality's area is covered by forests. At the same time, historical landscape structures with an agricultural-pastoral character have been preserved in Horný Tisovník and its surroundings. The municipality consists of andesitic tuffs and lava flows and has mineral springs. Traditional swing wells are also among the sights.

Stone Grave Markers and the Folk Art of Novohrad

The clearest cultural focus is the restored old cemetery. More than 80 stone grave markers have been preserved there. An information panel introduces Michal Miloslav Laciak (1826–1904), who is buried in this cemetery. The presentation includes additional information panels, explanatory texts in carved boxes, a central area with a main information panel and benches.

The site is located in a natural setting on a slope above Horný Tisovník, near the Evangelical church and a bell tower. As a result, you will encounter here not only individual grave markers, but also a clearly defined spatial insight into the local culture of remembrance. The stone and wooden folk grave markers of the Evangelical Christians of the Augsburg Confession from Horný and Dolný Tisovník were created between 1870 and 1930. They are considered the most representative and cohesive presentation of the folk art of Novohrad.

Their ornaments depict plants, various star and sun motifs, as well as birds, insects and human figures. Folk stone masonry also became established in Horný Tisovník. A separate memorial room is dedicated to the folk grave markers of Novohrad. For the rediscovery and restoration of folk grave markers and for preserving the spiritual heritage of the past, Horný Tisovník received a special award in 2017.

Churches and Bell Towers in the Village

The sacred buildings also take you through several historical layers. The Evangelical church of Horný Tisovník stands on the site of a wooden Evangelical prayer house from 1791 and was built in 1867. The Church of Saints Philip and James is located in the northeastern part of the village. It was originally Gothic, was completely rebuilt during the Renaissance and remodeled in the Baroque style from 1751 to 1755. The church is in good condition and serves its religious purpose.

The architectural details include a masonry bell tower with a square ground plan, rectangular sound openings, plain façades and a hipped roof. This bell tower stands on a slope in the central part of the village. In the open, undeveloped area above the lower part, there is also a wooden bell tower beside the masonry one. In Dolný Tisovník, the wooden bell tower has the characteristic form of the open, arcaded Renaissance bell towers of the 17th century. The different designs make the bell towers themselves independent elements of the village landscape.

Hiking Route to Zvolen

For a longer outdoor stage, the two-day, 40-kilometer hike “Osadami Javoria z Horného Tisovníka do Zvolena” is documented. It leads from Horný Tisovník via several settlements and waypoints to Zvolen. Horný Tisovník is listed as a bus connection for this hike. This means that the village can also be considered in the context of a multi-day route through the Javorie landscape, without reducing the hike to a single circular trail.
