Culture between Detva and Poľana

Detva District combines impressive landscapes with a distinctive Slovak folk culture. At the Podpolianske Museum, the “Instrumentum Excellens” exhibition presents Slovak folk musical instruments with interactive and educational elements. In the museum courtyard, you can see authentic carved wooden crosses from Detva featuring traditional motifs from the Podpoľanie region. Another exhibition, “Ovce moje, ovce…”, is dedicated to shepherding and Vlach traditions, sheep farming, milk production and the making of bryndza in Podpoľanie.

Culinary traditions are also part of the regional identity. In the Vagač House in Detva, Slovakia’s first bryndza cheese dairy was founded in the 19th century. TIK Detva also offers an experience package combining visits to sights in Detva with tastings of regional products and creative workshops with traditional artisans. Volcanic Landscape and Trails

Poľana is Slovakia’s highest and best-preserved volcanic mountain range. The caldera is approximately 6 kilometres wide and 800 metres deep. Melichova skala above Skliarovo is a striking individual landscape feature: the protected natural monument is a column-like rock formation approximately 30 metres high and a remnant of the front of a lava flow. You can reach Melichova skala via a hiking trail from the Skliarovo district, at the Murínovci stop.

For a longer route, the approximately five-kilometre Mikuláš Esterházy educational trail is available in Detvianska Huta. It was opened there in Detva District and can be walked or cycled; some sections can also be driven by car. Several stations offer panoramic views of Poľana, the Kremnica Mountains and part of the Štiavnica Mountains. Detvianska Huta also has the “Za cestou skla” educational trail.

The signposted cycling network also opens up several directions, including the Rudohorská cyklomagistrála, Hontianská cyklomagistrála, Novohradská cyklomagistrála and the Okruh okolo Poľany. In summer, Košútka Park becomes an adventure park with a 455-metre zip line and a downhill cycling track. There are numerous hiking and cycling trails around the park.

Cultural Monuments and Annual Events

The Kalamárka archaeological site in Detva preserves the remains of fortifications and a water cistern. The gate at the Dianiškov House and the associated folk dwelling are listed in the Register of National Cultural Monuments of Slovakia. Vígľaš Castle, in the municipality of Vígľaš in Detva District, is designated as a cultural monument. The fujara, a characteristic Slovak shepherd’s flute, has been recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

The Folklórne slávnosti pod Poľanou festival takes place every year in Detva and attracts many visitors. Approximately 1,500 participants also come to Detva. During Dni mesta Detva, the historic partisan mobilisation is commemorated every year. This makes it possible to combine your stay, depending on your interests, with museum content, archaeological sites, landscape trails or recurring cultural events.
