Krokava: Tŕstie, Nature Trail and Mountain Landscape
Accommodation in Krokava
Krokava combines a distinctive mountain landscape with protected wetland habitats, historic villagescapes and several routes for active days. The village lies on the southern slope of Tŕstie in the eastern Slovak Ore Mountains. The cadastral area ranges from 750 to 1,121 metres above sea level, providing a distinctly mountainous setting for exploring the surrounding area.
Landscape around Tŕstie
The Tŕstie Nature Reserve extends across the cadastral areas of Tisovec, Rimavská Píla and Krokava. It has been protected since 1980 and covers 28.71 hectares. Notable features include rare and biologically diverse wetland and peat habitats, including areas with the rare round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia). The surroundings of Krokava are largely deforested. Where forests predominate, they are mainly beech forests. Open slopes and protected natural areas thus meet different landscapes within a relatively clearly defined area.
Nature Trail and Distant Views
The nature trail is a distinct highlight for exploring Tŕstie. Part of the route leads through the Tŕstie Nature Reserve; the trail is intended exclusively for pedestrians. The Tŕstie nature trail described from Tisovec is 6 km long and has five information boards. They focus on the Tŕstie Massif and its natural wealth. The route also passes a monument to the botanist Václav Vraný. Panoramic views of the Low Tatras and High Tatras, as well as Muránska planina, are cited as a scenic highlight.
Hiking, Cycling and Winter Sports
The Cesta Márie Széchy tourist route offers another way to experience the landscape. It runs along the ridge of Tŕstie and connects Fiľakovo Castle with Muráň Castle. In addition to the local nature trail, this provides a route in the surroundings of two castles whose course follows the mountain ridge.
Cyclists will also find a clearly defined route: the Krokava cycling route leads uphill through the village to the ski lift at the edge of the village and is rated as moderately difficult. There is also a ski resort in the cadastral area of Krokava. From the upper point of the ski lift, there is a picturesque view of the municipality of Sirk and Železník Mountain.
Villagescape and Folk Culture
Krokava can be experienced through more than just nature trails and high-altitude scenery. The picturesque cottages convey elements of local folk culture to visitors, while several centuries-old houses offer insights into the history of the village. The villagescape also includes a bell tower with a masonry ground floor and a timber-clad upper floor. Together with the old houses, it creates a cultural contrast with the peatlands, forested slopes and viewpoints of Tŕstie.
