Vyšný Skálnik: Maginhrad, Educational Trail and Skálnik Reservoir
Accommodation in Vyšný Skálnik
Vyšný Skálnik combines the landscape of the Slovak Ore Mountains with archaeological traces, memorial sites connected with Slovak literature and an educational trail around Maginhrad. If you are looking for accommodation in Vyšný Skálnik, you will not find a generic base here, but rather a place with several clearly distinct reasons to visit: the river floodplain and valley area, historical evidence, an educational trail accessible year-round, and Skálnik Reservoir with seasonally varying uses.
Landscape between the Rimava, sandstone and red marble
Vyšný Skálnik lies in the south of the Slovak Ore Mountains, on the floodplain and in the valley of the Rimava. The local landscape history also includes the extraction of decorative red marble. Another geological feature is located on the western slopes of the volcanic cone Čelo, which reaches 387 m: the local sandstones preserve imprints of leaves as well as branches of hornbeam, chestnut, elm and willow. This means that the village can be understood not only as a landscape, but also as a site of traces from the history of the Earth.
Archaeological finds and the ruins of Maginhrad
The history of Vyšný Skálnik dates back to the La Tène period. The village contains archaeological finds from 400–0 BC as well as Celtic coins. The ruins of Maginhrad are also located above Vyšný Skálnik. For a stay, this creates a connection between local early history and a fortified historical site, without requiring both subjects to be combined into a single visitor experience.
“In the Footsteps of Maginhrad” Educational Trail
The “In the Footsteps of Maginhrad” educational trail includes two stops at sandstone quarries and begins at Skálnik Reservoir in Vyšný Skálnik. It can be reached by car or bus, is accessible year-round and can be visited independently without prior arrangement. Its visiting format is therefore clearly defined: you can explore the two stops on your own and plan the trail independently of a guided event. The combination of sandstone quarries, the reservoir and Maginhrad makes the trail an independent way to experience the local landscape.
Ján Botto and the cultural side of the village
Vyšný Skálnik is the birthplace of the poet Ján Botto from the Štúr generation (1829–1881). A memorial plaque commemorates him at his birth house. The cultural centre contains a memorial room dedicated to Ján Botto; there is also a monument with a bust of the poet in front of the cultural centre. These sites distribute the remembrance of Botto across several stops and give the village a distinctly literary dimension alongside its landscape and historical traces.
Skálnik Reservoir in different seasons
Skálnik Reservoir is used for recreation in summer. In winter, it is used for winter sports. At the same time, the reservoir is the starting point of the “In the Footsteps of Maginhrad” educational trail, thus bringing seasonal use and cultural exploration together in one specific place.
