A trip to Veľké Teriakovce can be planned around three distinct themes: architectural history, hiking, and traditions associated with the end of the herding season. These include the classicist Vodný mlyn mill, with part of its milling equipment preserved; Protestant churches with different architectural histories; and marked trails with specific route details. If you would like to combine culture and outdoor activity, you can take these interests into account when planning. It is worth checking individual visiting conditions and route details carefully: the mill must be booked in advance, and both elevation profile and trail markings matter when hiking.

Vodný mlyn: Mill Architecture and Technology

The classicist Vodný mlyn is a mill building dating from 1800. Part of the technical equipment used to grind flour has been preserved. The building’s design and milling technology are both among its surviving features: the mill can be understood both as a classicist building and through its function. To visit, you must book an appointment at least 24 hours in advance. Allow for this notice period if the mill is to be a fixed part of your stay.

Protestant Churches and Their Architectural History

The Protestant church in Veľké Teriakovce also reflects several historical periods. It is a single-nave church built under the terms of the Edict of Toleration, in the Baroque-Classicist style. The presbytery has a segmental end, and a tower dating from 1790 stands in front of it. “Single-nave” describes the layout of the church around a main nave, while the presbytery and the tower in front of it refer to other parts of the building. The church was remodeled in the mid-19th century and restored in 1925. These dates refer to different phases of construction: 1790 dates the tower, while the remodeling and restoration took place later.

The Protestant church in Malé Teriakovce is also associated with Veľké Teriakovce and is part of the Gotická cesta. Its original structure was built in the first half of the 15th century as a Gothic church. Its coffered ceiling is considered one of the oldest in Slovakia. The church stands in the northeastern part of the village, on a slight rise within the cemetery. Its Gothic origins, coffered ceiling and membership in the Gotická cesta are distinct points of interest in its architectural history.

Mitrovanie: Traditions and Craftsmanship

Mitrovanie, also called valaské hody or sviatok ovčiarov, is an old tradition marking the end of the herding season. On October 18, 2025, the event was held for the twelfth time at Salaš pod Maginhradom in Veľké Teriakovce. That year’s program included demonstrations of sheep shearing, the preparation of Žinčica, the making of cheese, Parenica and Bryndza, and the processing of sheep’s wool. These examples bring together activities associated with sheep farming and the preparation and making of regional products. The date and program may vary from year to year; check both if you are planning to attend a future event.

Hiking: Route, Elevation Profile and Markings

The hiking route from Veľké Teriakovce to Maginhrad is listed as 3 km long, with a walking time of 1 hour, 205 m of ascent and 10 m of descent. Taken together, these figures convey more than just distance: in addition to the route length, you can also take the elevation profile into account. Before setting out, compare the published figures with the current trail signage.

A marked yellow hiking trail, numbered 8489, leads from Veľké Teriakovce towards Teplý Vrch. At the marked junction Pod Maginhradom, you must switch to the green trail to reach the Maginhrad lookout tower. The yellow trail alone does not lead all the way to the lookout tower. Since trail markings and conditions can change, check the signage before you set off. This keeps route details and the actual marked trail separate, but equally important, planning considerations.
