Ilija at the foot of Sitno

Ilija lies in the Štiavnické Mountains at the northern foot of the Sitno massif. The summit of Sitno is located in the cadastral area of Ilija; the Sitno National Nature Reserve also extends into the southwestern part of the municipality. For travelers looking for a landscape in Slovakia with natural and cultural connections, Sitno is therefore the defining reference point of the area.

Ilija lies directly within the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The Pralesy Slovenska–Sitno protected area includes parcels in the cadastral area of Ilija. Its conservation objectives include beech and beech-fir herb-rich forests of European importance. The protected area is also a habitat for rare and protected species. The Sitno locality belongs to the SKUEV0216 Natura 2000 site. The landscape protection directly concerns Ilija, while Pralesy Slovenska–Sitno encompasses parcels in the cadastral area; the Natura 2000 designation refers to the Sitno locality. A tourist-marked route runs within reach of the western edge of the Sitno primeval forest locality.

Trails, views and orientation

A 4.3-kilometer route leads from Ilija to Sitno. It is marked green at first and blue thereafter; the stated walking time is two hours. The Andrej Kmeť educational trail was also established in the territory of Ilija.

A renovated wooden lookout tower dating from 1727 stands on the summit of Sitno. The lookout tower houses an information center for nature conservation, which is open to the public from May to September. This seasonal information applies to the information center; it is not intended as a general statement about access to the summit or other sites.

Historic traces in Ilija and at Sitno

The year 1266 is regarded as the beginning of Ilija’s documented history. Another historical point of reference is Sitno Castle: it was built in the 13th century on the site of a prehistoric fortified settlement and has been a ruin since the beginning of the 18th century. The history of the area and the ruins at Sitno therefore belong to different periods, from the prehistoric fortification through the Middle Ages to the castle’s present-day condition.

The Church of Saint Giles, a Romanesque church from the first half of the 13th century, stands in Ilija. It is located on a hillside above Ilija and is not enclosed by a fence. Its portal is late Romanesque and decorated with ornaments featuring plant and animal motifs. For your visit, the site combines its location above the village with a clearly described architectural detail, without allowing any further conclusions about opening hours or interior access.
