Banska Stiavnica: UNESCO World Heritage, Mining History and Landscapes

Banská Štiavnica combines a preserved historic town centre with traces of ore mining and a protected landscape. The town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Historic Town of Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity”. The historic centre was established in the 16th century, providing an unusually clear insight into the town’s history, while mines, technical monuments and educational trails reveal further facets of the same place.

Historic Town and Fortresses

Starý zámok shows how different periods come together in Banská Štiavnica: the complex combines a Romanesque basilica, Gothic elements, a Renaissance fortress and Baroque art. Inside, you will find the archaeological exhibition “Baníci prichádzajú…”. Nový zámok complements this picture as a Renaissance fortress built between 1564 and 1571 against the Ottomans, while also serving as a watchtower. Its exhibition focuses on the military situation, the weaponry of the fortresses built against the Ottomans, the weapons of the Hungarian and Turkish armies, and painted shooting targets. The historic Kammerhof also has its own focus. There, you can trace the development of Slovak mining from archaeological finds to modern technologies. The exhibition presents mining work from the oldest archaeological finds through to the 20th century. The Calvary of Banská Štiavnica provides a sacred contrast: it is a Baroque ensemble connected with its natural surroundings.

Mining Underground and at the Water Reservoir

The Banské múzeum v prírode is located about 1 km from the town centre, below the Tajch Klinger reservoir. Visits to original mine workings are offered there; at the same time, the museum presents the development of ore mining in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. The underground exhibition includes a horse-powered Gápel. This is the only preserved hoisting machine of this type in Slovakia powered by a cable drive for a mine lift. The Dedičná štôlňa Glanzenberg leads through an accessible section extending 500 m to a depth of 32 m. A commemorative plaque there recalls the visit of Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine in 1751. In this way, both technical evidence of mining and concrete historical traces of individual periods can be encountered in the town and its surroundings.

Easy Educational Trails with Different Areas of Focus

For a combination of landscape and town views, the Milan Kapusta educational trail along the Terézia ore vein is a suitable choice. The easy hiking trail is 6.1 km long and begins at the Červená studňa saddle. It passes the Tajch Ottergrund reservoir and offers views of Banská Štiavnica and its prominent buildings. The starting point can be reached on foot from Trinity Square in about 45 minutes via a green-marked route covering around 1.5 km. The Kysihýbel educational trail is also described as an easy route and measures 6.5 km. It begins about 400 m behind the town sign at the edge of Banská Štiavnica. The route leads to the Feismantel Garden and past a red rhyolite quarry and an underground andesite quarry. The two educational trails therefore differ in their documented character: Milan Kapusta combines an ore vein, a water reservoir and town views, while Kysihýbel explores geological and garden-related points of interest.

Getting Around the Town and Protected Surroundings

The main sights in the centre of Banská Štiavnica can be visited on foot. Hilly terrain should be expected in the historic centre. Tajch Klinger is one of the water reservoirs closest to the town centre. The natural surroundings of the UNESCO World Heritage site are protected by the Štiavnické Vrchy Protected Landscape Area. Under Act No. 543/2002 Coll., it forms a buffer zone covering 62,128 ha. The Informačné centrum Banská Štiavnica provides information about the town and free basic maps. The centre also provides information about cultural monuments, museums, exhibitions, events and excursion tips.
