Štiavnické Bane between mining history and a water landscape

Štiavnické Bane combines cultural and historical landmarks with a landscape whose distinctive features can be explored along several educational trails. Mining, water management and the historic buildings of the village are at the center. If you are planning a trip through Slovakia around clearly defined themes rather than a mere list of sights, you will find different ways to explore the area here: short information trails, longer routes with elevation gain, water reservoirs used for recreation and sacred architecture.

Educational trails with different focuses

The Piargsky chodník is a 5.3 km educational trail with nine information panels. It presents the area's most important mining structures, including shafts and adits, and also explains ore processing. Mining is therefore not limited to individual structures but is recognizable as a coherent theme along the trail.

The Piargsky vodohospodársky systém educational trail focuses on the connection between mining and water. At 16 stations, it explains the uniqueness of the mining and water-management system in one part of the Piarg group of water reservoirs. There is a long route of 15,110 m with an elevation gain of 100 m and a short route of 10,350 m with an elevation gain of 85 m. The two figures differ not only in length but also in the documented elevation gain of the respective route.

In addition, the Ökológia piargskych tajchov educational trail focuses on the biological environment and the related water quality of selected water reservoirs. The trail begins at the main dam of the Veľká Richňava water reservoir, includes five stations and can be completed on foot in two to three hours. Thus, alongside mining and technology, the ecological aspect of the water reservoirs is also a central theme.

Historic buildings and UNESCO context

The Church of St. Joseph and the associated monastery complex at Vindšachta are part of the cultural landscape. Both were built between 1735 and 1754. The church is a single-nave Baroque church with a projecting tower; a two-storey monastery building adjoins it on the north side. Its furnishings include an organ built in 1754, probably by the renowned organ builder Martin Podkonický. This cautious attribution remains part of the historical detail.

The urban conservation area of Štiavnické Bane is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Town of Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity.” This World Heritage Site also includes the urban conservation area of Banská Štiavnica and the protected historic zone of Hodruša-Hámre. In addition, the municipal territory of Štiavnické Bane lies wholly or partly within the core zone of the Banská Štiavnica Geopark.

Water reservoirs and calvaries

The Veľká Windšachtská water reservoir was built between 1712 and 1715 and is one of the first four water reservoirs in the area of present-day Štiavnické Bane. Today, it serves recreational purposes. At the same time, it is an inseparable part of the unique Banská Štiavnica water-management system, which has been preserved locally in authentic form and in its original extent, with only minor local disturbances or damage.

Another historic highlight is the Štiavnické Bane–Horná Roveň Calvary. It has six stations dating from 1754 and leads to a crucifixion group from 1730. Štiavnické Bane thus makes it possible to explore technical history, the water landscape and religious art as clearly distinct themes.
