Banský Studenec

Banský Studenec combines protected landscape, the Kolpašské Lakes and evidence of regional history. The entire cadastral area has been part of the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area since 1979. At the same time, the village is one of the municipalities in the Banskoštiavnický Geopark. Those choosing accommodation in Banský Studenec will therefore find a place where observing nature, paths by the water and cultural monuments are closely connected with the landscape.

Lakes, protected areas and trails

The Kolpašské Lakes shape the opportunities for activities in the area. They are freely accessible to the public and are now used mainly for fishing, especially the smaller lakes. The larger lakes are used primarily for summer recreation. A specific point of orientation is the path between Veľké Kolpašské tajch and Malé Kolpašské tajch, which has been renovated and illuminated.

The Gajdošovo Nature Reserve is also located in the cadastral area of Banský Studenec. Its meadow biotopes are home to protected plant species. Another natural attraction is the Kysihýbel Arboretum: this protected forestry experimental area contains stands of fast-growing non-native tree species. A total of 282 tree species were planted there, mainly from North America.

Nature trail and historical traces

The Kysihýbel Nature Trail begins in Banský Studenec at the western edge of the Kysihýbel Arboretum. It is designed as a self-guided, circular hiking trail that can be used year-round. The underground Barlangy quarry, also known as Diery, lies along the route. The nature trail thus connects the forestry collection with a historical underground site, without implying that this is a guided visitor experience.

Among the notable buildings is the Kostol Premenenia Pána Church. The Baroque church was built in 1743–1745 and has original Baroque interior furnishings. There is also a wooden bell tower beside the church, dating from the 1850s and listed as a national cultural monument. Another religious sight is the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, built in 1943.

Kysihýbel is also home to an aqueduct built around 1870. It was constructed during the building of the narrow-gauge railway from Hronská Breznica to Štiavnica. The historic infrastructure thus complements the sacred buildings and makes different chapters of local and regional history visible.

Cycling route and annual event

For cyclists, the Barborská cesta runs from Svätý Anton to Banský Studenec and the Kolpašské Lake. Its cycling route also goes around Veľké Kolpašské jazero along the dam in Banský Studenec.
