Hodejovec: Landscape, Hiking Trail and Church
Accommodation in Hodejovec
Hodejovec lies among the hills of the Cerová vrchovina and combines a distinct landscape with a prominent ecclesiastical monument and a documented hiking route. Almost the entire cadastral area belongs to the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. At the same time, Hodejovec is part of the Cerová vrchovina a Rimavská kotlina Natura 2000 site. The village thus represents a rural side of Slovakia, where natural areas, agriculture and older settlement history are closely visible alongside one another.
Landscape Between Forest Habitats and Cultivated Land
The protected surroundings also include the Cerová vrchovina – lesné biotopy area (SKUEV0357). This European Site of Community Importance for forest habitats covers an area of 2,626.48 hectares and includes the cadastral area of Hodejovec.
The terrain consists of Tertiary sandstones. In the southwest, remnants of lava flows created by erosion emerge. The area is also home mainly to remnants of oak forests and stands of black locust. Agricultural crops are grown across most of the cadastral area. Geological features, remnants of forests and cultivated areas therefore come together within a relatively small local area. The Hodejovec area is also considered interesting for mushroom pickers.
Hiking Route Passing Through the Village
If you would like to include Hodejovec in a hiking plan, the 24-kilometre hiking trail from Hodejov railway station to Hajnáčka railway station provides a specific point of reference. A 1.81-kilometre section runs through Hodejovec. Hodejovec is therefore not only a landscape designation, but also part of a longer connection between two railway stations.
Church of Saint Martin and Local History
The dominant landmark of Hodejovec is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Martin the Bishop, dating from 1737. It was originally a Baroque church and was remodelled in the Classicist style in 1836. Renovation took place in 1927, and the tower was raised at the same time. The building has a single nave and a straight altar termination. The presbytery is vaulted with a Bohemian plack, while the façade was renovated and given a two-colour design. The church is in very good condition and serves its religious purpose.
Hodejovec also gains a distinct profile from its older history. The village was first mentioned in writing in 1427, when it was called Keregede. For many years, Hodejovec belonged to the Hajnáčka castle estate. The historical name and the subsequent development of the church thus represent different layers of local history that can be traced in a relatively small village.
Putting It in Context for Your Trip to Slovakia
For orientation around Hodejovec, the combination of the Cerová vrchovina landscape, protected forest habitats, agriculturally shaped cadastral area, hiking route and church is particularly relevant. The area is also considered suitable for entrepreneurial activities in agrotourism. This describes the possible direction of the village, not a specific accommodation or leisure offer.
