Abovce – Manor House, Churches and the Slaná River
Accommodation in Abovce
Abovce lies in the southern part of the Rimavská kotlina basin, in the valley of the Slaná River. The village therefore combines a clearly identifiable landscape setting with notable buildings and documented opportunities connected with the fishing pond and river. This creates a varied picture for you: the manor house and churches are central within the built-up area, while fishing plays a distinct role by the water.
Location, Road and Railway
Road II/571 runs through Abovce. In addition, railway line No. 160 between Zvolen and Košice passes through the village; the Abovce railway stop is located on this line. The connection with the village is also clearly visible from the road: on the route from Rimavská Seč towards Abovce, a sign together with a banner on the right-hand side points to Štrkovisko Abovce.
Manor House and Churches in Abovce
In the centre of the built-up area lies the Abaffyovcov Manor House complex. The Abafiovcov (Abaffyovcov) Manor House is a single-storey, three-part Classicist building with Baroque elements on a rectangular ground plan. It was built between 1800 and 1810. In the register of national cultural monuments of Slovakia, the manor house is listed under number 932. This entry documents its protected heritage status without making any statements about current visitor access.
Another distinctive building is the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is a single-nave Neo-Gothic building with a polygonal presbytery termination and a projecting tower dating from 1907. Abovce's older sacred history also includes an earlier church, mentioned in 1745, which had already been built in the Late Middle Ages. Its façades are articulated by buttresses and pointed-arch windows. Abovce's building heritage comprises three structures from different periods: a Classicist manor house with Baroque elements, a Neo-Gothic church and an earlier medieval church building.
Štrkovisko Abovce and Fishing on the Slaná
Štrkovisko Abovce is a private fishing pond. If you enter the water area, you must report to the administrator. You can purchase a fishing permit there as needed. The guard provides visitor information and handles reservations. The site should therefore not simply be understood as freely accessible waterside accommodation, but as a place where access is subject to the stated registration and the relevant fishing permit.
Fishing in the Slaná River is also highlighted in Abovce as an opportunity for tourism. The fishing pond and the river represent two different aquatic features of the village: at Štrkovisko, the administrator's or guard's instructions apply, while the Slaná is mentioned as both a river and a touristically promoted fishing location. Several municipal events are also organised in Abovce every year.
