Babinec: Church, Crafts and Landscape
Accommodation in Babinec
Babinec combines a distinctive location in the Slovak Ore Mountains with an unusually vivid cultural heritage. Babínec lies in the southeastern part of the mountains on a flat ridge between the Rimava valley and the Papča stream. The area is deforested; there is an oak forest in the northern part. This means that navigating the area brings together an open highland setting and a clearly defined forested area.
Landscape and Getting There
For your journey, regional bus route 511 is a specific point of reference. It has been in service since February 1, 2026, and serves the “Babinec, rázc.” and “Babinec, obec” stops on the Rimavská Sobota–Kyjatice route. The two stop names distinguish the junction from the stop in the municipality. Babinec is served by two stops on this regional connection.
Church, Bell Tower and Historical Details
The Evangelical church is a Neoclassical church building from the late 18th century. The nave has a flat wooden coffered ceiling with late Renaissance–Baroque rustic ornamentation featuring stylized flowers and leaves. This ceiling was transferred from an older building, preserving a design element that reaches beyond the period in which the present church was built.
The furnishings also include an organ dating from 1739. Its three-part case is decorated with Baroque acanthus ornamentation. The bell tower is likewise a Neoclassical building from the late 18th century, complemented by later Baroque elements. The bell in the bell tower was cast in 1813 by B. Stephanides of Lučenec. The cultural and social event “Stretneme sa pod Turničkou” is regularly held at the bell tower. The church, organ, ceiling, tower and bell each represent a different layer of the locality’s history.
Flax, Weaving and Rural Crafts
Those interested in the region’s everyday culture will find a focus on the processing of natural materials in Babínec. Flax processing was one of the inhabitants’ oldest occupations, particularly among women. The museum exhibition “Od ľanu k plátnu” familiarizes visitors with the tools that the ancestors of Babínec’s inhabitants used to process flax for the production of linen.
In addition, Babínec had a tradition of linen weaving and making rag rugs. In the first half of the 20th century, spindles, heddles and chests made from split beechwood were produced at home. The chests were used to store clothing and grain. These examples show not only individual objects, but also the connection between materials, handcraft and domestic use.
