ÄŒSA - Czech Airlines (CSA) stopped flights from Bratislava, Zilina and Poprad. Cancellation of flights was motivated by low economic impact and poor ticket sales for new directions. Among the areas of Slovakia, where ÄŒSA will be presented is only one city in Slovakia - the second largest town of the country Kosice.
It is worth noting that the Czech Airlines refused from Bratislava flights a half year after it started to use the airport in the capital of Slovakia.
In early 2011 the airport of Bratislava was interested in attracting new airlines due to the bankruptcy of SkyEurope - the main budget carrier in Slovakia, because the airport hosted only one major airline - the Irish low-cost Ryanair. In this case the airport of Bratislava was not able to introduce its own tariff policy. In fact, the airport authorities had to make constant concessions to Ryanair. New airlines in the main airport of Slovakia allowed strengthening competition and positions of the airport in the European air market. However, the aims and objectives of the airports and airlines do not always coincide.
The director for marketing of the airport Thomas Kiki commented on the ÄŒSA - Czech Airlines decision to cancel flights from Bratislava before the Christmas as "abnormal", according to the Slovak edition SME. Currently the airport is negotiating with other carriers to replace the canceled flights.
Either way, comments of the Czech Airlines about the low efficiency of the Bratislava airport can be questioned. According to the data published by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ÄŒSA airline was able to sell 15% more tickets than in 2010 using the power of Slovak airports. Moreover, some airline’s flights were among the most popular at the Bratislava airport. Thus, the Bratislava-Paris flight was the 6th popular direction of the airport. Just a month ago ÄŒSA - Czech Airlines announced opening of a new flight from Poprad to London, which in the future should have been to become profitable amid the rising popularity of Slovakian ski resorts. It seems that active participation of the Czech airline in the Slovak passenger air communication is now very unlikely.
