Veľké Hoste in the Zlatnícka dolina

Veľké Hoste is located on the Livina stream at the foot of the Považský Inovec in the Zlatnícka dolina. The valley depression is also known locally as “Suchá dolina” or “Suchodolie”. Its history reaches far back: the area around Veľké Hoste has been continuously inhabited for approximately 4,000 years. The village thus combines a clearly named landscape with an unusually broad sequence of archaeological traces and memorial sites.

Archaeological traces from the Neolithic to Great Moravia

The territory of Veľké Hoste contains archaeological evidence of a Neolithic settlement, a Lengyel culture settlement from the Late Bronze Age, a settlement from the Hallstatt period and a settlement from the Roman Imperial period. There is also a Slavic burial mound dating from the 7th to the 9th century. Those who wish to view the development of the region not only through individual structures but across different eras will find a correspondingly multifaceted local history here.

The Chrástky educational trail passes through an archaeological site with burial grounds from different periods, from the Lusatian culture to the period of Great Moravia. Its thematic scope supplements the individual settlement references with an explicitly designated path through the site. In Veľké Hoste, both the long history of settlement and the different historical layers are therefore central.

Chapel, belfry and local customs

The visible local history includes the belfry of Veľké Hoste, which dates from the 16th century and has been reconstructed, as well as the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Several residents contributed their labor to the construction of the chapel; in 1917, the building was almost complete. The chapel contains a statue carved from a single piece of wood that was brought from Poland.

Every September, Catholic believers gather in the chapel in the upper part of Veľké Hoste to commemorate the Feast of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. A different emphasis is provided by the traditional autumn event “Kačacie hody”: it includes an evening of dancing with stuffed duck from a wood-fired oven, accompanied by lokše and salad made from fresh cabbage. Sacred remembrance and regional festival culture thus appear as two different sides of the village.

Memorial sites in Veľké Hoste

At the SNP memorial in the village center, a commemorative plaque lists the names of twelve residents of Veľké Hoste who died in the uprising and in fascist concentration camps. Another memorial site is the local B-17 memorial. It was made by residents from the remains of the bomber and commemorates an American bomber that crashed in Veľké Hoste on February 1, 1945. Four airmen died in the crash.

Every year, soldiers, villagers and members of KVH Geronimo meet at the B-17 crash site. Alongside the settlement history reaching far back, remembrance of the events of the 20th century is therefore firmly anchored in the local history.

Events and regional connections

One example from the 2026 event calendar was the “Veľko-Hostianska vatra”. It took place on July 18, 2026, from 3 p.m. behind the sports field in Veľké Hoste and was billed as an event that brings history to life. The program included craft markets, historical demonstrations, archery and horse-related activities. At 8 p.m., the bonfire was lit; this was followed by a fire show and an evening program with music and dancing.

Veľké Hoste is part of the Suchodolie microregion. Its annual relay race passes through the entire Suchá dolina. In addition, the “Duchonka – Zlatníky – Solčianky – Topoľčany” cycle loop passes through Veľké Hoste. Thus, both a regional connection through the landscape and a specifically named cycle loop are documented for orientation.
