Sedmerovec: Pominovec, Churches and Pilgrimage

Sedmerovec lies in the Ilavské podolie region at the foot of the White Carpathians. The village is defined by a Romanesque church, several chapels and churches, and traditional pilgrimage customs. This makes it a destination where landscape and sacred history are closely intertwined, while the individual sites each retain their own character.

Pominovec: Romanesque History and a Special Place

In the village district of Pominovec, within the cadastral area of Sedmerovec, stands a Romanesque manor church dating from the 12th century. It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and has been listed as a national cultural monument since November 7, 1963. The Pominovec site can be visited freely; access to the church interior can be arranged in advance. This distinction is important for your planning because visiting the grounds and entering the church are not the same thing.

The church lies about 1.5 km southeast of Sedmerovec. A field road branches off from Main Road 507 between Nemšová and Pruské. At the same time, the church is located within the cadastral area of Sedmerovec, in the middle of fields between Bolešov and Pruské. Pominovec therefore appears as a clearly separate sacred site outside the built-up area. The church is now used only rarely for religious ceremonies.

Pilgrimages and Chapels Throughout the Year

One distinctive tradition is the cycling pilgrimage “Cyklopúť Pominovec,” held annually since 2004 on the last Sunday in August. The pilgrimage includes a Mass, a symbolic blessing of the bicycles, and the distribution of Saint Christopher stickers to pilgrims. For cycling travelers, the focus here is therefore not only on the destination but also on a specifically established religious occasion.

A solemn church fair Mass is held every year at the central chapel on the occasion of the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The centrally located Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was consecrated in 1927. Above Sedmerovec, on Líščia, the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary was consecrated on September 15, 1997. A Mass is usually celebrated at this chapel on September 15 for the Feast of the Seven Sorrows of Mary; the faithful also gather there to pray the Rosary, especially in May.

Churches of Sedmerovec

The village church of Sedmerovec is also part of the local sacred history. It is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was consecrated on June 30, 2002, and was partially renovated in 2022. The roof covering was renewed and a new façade was installed. Together with the older central chapel, the chapel on Líščia, and the church of Pominovec, it creates a diverse picture: Sedmerovec preserves both more recent church buildings and a Romanesque manor church listed as a cultural monument.
