Plavnica – Churches, Wooden Houses and EuroVelo 11

Plavnica combines significant religious buildings, traditional wooden houses and a clearly identifiable cycling route. This creates a place where you can discover architecture and regional history within a compact thematic area. Particularly characteristic are the Kostol Obetovania Pána church, the Neoclassical Protestant building, several chapels and the Drevená zvonica.

Early Gothic Church and Historic Works of Art

The Kostol Obetovania Pána church was built around 1325 in the Early Gothic style. The surrounding walls and a Gothic window on the eastern side of the presbytery have survived from this complex. The building is therefore noteworthy not only for its age, but also for the specific medieval elements that have remained visible to this day.

The interior also contains a Late Baroque sculpture and a polychrome wood carving of Christ on the Cross. Both works date from the second half of the 18th century. Together with the preserved parts of the Early Gothic complex, they create an unusual juxtaposition of different eras.

Chapels and Wooden Buildings in Plavnica

Several smaller religious buildings complete the picture. The Korunovania Panny Márie Chapel dates from 1857 and is located on the road towards Stará Ľubovňa. The Povýšenia sv. Kríža Chapel was built in 1826 in the Neoclassical style and is located in the cemetery. Another chapel, sv. Cyrila a Metoda, was built at the beginning of the 20th century.

The sv. Jána Nepomúckeho Chapel was built at the end of the 18th century and is a Baroque-Neoclassical building surrounded by a small park. Inside it is a colourful folk sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk from the 19th century. This building thus combines architectural history with a specific example of regional folk art.

Secular architecture also deserves attention: Plavnica is home to several well-preserved picturesque wooden houses dating from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Drevená zvonica dates from approximately the same period. It was declared a national cultural monument in 2016 and provides another distinctive accent within the historic townscape.

Protestant Church and Jewish Cemetery

The Evanjelický a.v. kostol was built in 1806 in the Neoclassical style. Its floor plan is shaped like a Greek cross. At the same time, the church is regarded as a valuable representative of the tolerance churches in the Šariš region. This gives you an architectural peculiarity together with a regional historical-religious context, without reducing the building to its external form.

Another place of remembrance is located on a hill west of Plavnica and north of the road to Stará Ľubovňa: the Jewish cemetery. The cemetery was restored several years ago.

Plavnica on the EuroVelo 11 Cycling Route

The EuroVelo 11 cycling route passes through Plavnica. As a tourism product, EuroVelo 11 runs for 157 km through the Prešov region and includes Plavnica on its route. For a bicycle journey, this provides a specific connection between the town and a route designated at supraregional level.
