Nová Ľubovňa between mineral springs and Goral tradition

The character of Nová Ľubovňa is particularly tangible where relaxation, forest landscapes, winter sports and living Goral tradition come together. The settlement of Ľubovnianske Kúpele, which belongs to the municipalities of Nová Ľubovňa and Chmeľnica, is a recreational and spa settlement in the Spišsko-šarišské medzihorie and lies in the valley of the Ľubovnianka stream. Mineral springs and historic forest park

There are freely accessible mineral springs in Ľubovnianske Kúpele. The mineral water from there is bottled and sold under the name Ľubovnianka. You will therefore encounter the name both at the springs and as the designation of bottled mineral water available for sale.

An educational trail with six stations leads through part of the historic forest park. The park also contains a botanical feature that is particularly rarely documented in Slovakia: it contains the only four documented specimens of the Pyrenean pine in Slovakia. One of these specimens has eleven trunks. Together with the mineral springs, this creates a destination where nature observation, forest history and the local spa tradition stand side by side.

Cycling path and winter sports

From Nová Ľubovňa, Ľubovnianske Kúpele can be reached via a cycling path that passes through the natural landscape of the Levoča Mountains. The cycling path thus provides a separate connection between the town and the spa settlement. There is also a ski resort with three ski lifts behind Ľubovnianske Kúpele. The documented local features therefore range from mineral springs and an educational trail to an explicitly mentioned winter sports option.

Goral music and traditional dress

The culture of Nová Ľubovňa is reflected in more than just its buildings. Through its performances and activities, the folklore group FSk Taľar represents and preserves the traditional dress of Nová Ľubovňa. The municipality also has four original basic melodies to which most humorous, wedding and occasional songs of the Goral tradition are sung.

Pastrnoci preserves a living archive of Goral songs and dances. The group performs at various cultural events in the municipality as well as at social and family occasions in the wider area. The oldest folk music in the municipality originated in the 1920s as the Valigurských family band. Several of its musicians later performed in the Pastrnik folklore group and in the Pastrnoci folk music ensemble. This makes it possible to trace the musical tradition from its early forms through to later groups.

Chapels and ecclesiastical history

A notable landmark in the local history is the chapel of “Sedembolestnej Panny Márie”. It was built in 1846 and is the oldest chapel in Nová Ľubovňa. It stands on the upper edge of the town along the road to Jakubany. There are three chapels in total within the built-up area of the municipality.
