Spišské Podhradie combines sacred architectural history with a landscape that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Sacred architectural history in Spišské Podhradie

The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary dates back to a Gothic church from the 13th century. It was later remodelled into its present-day Neoclassical form. The Evangelical church represents a different period: it was built between 1799 and 1808 as a Neoclassical structure. Together, the two churches represent different phases in the town’s architectural history.

The town’s history can also be seen in other buildings. The Monastery of the Brothers of Mercy is associated with a municipal hospital documented in Spišské Podhradie since 1327. The water mill is considered the town’s oldest agricultural and technical structure. It is open to visitors during the summer season and complements the sacred sights with evidence of the town’s technical and agricultural past.

Synagogue with preserved interior furnishings

The synagogue in Spišské Podhradie is a special stop. It was built around 1875 and restored after a fire in 1905–1906. The building is a typical example of 19th-century provincial synagogue architecture. Inside, a women’s gallery supported by cast-iron columns and the original Torah ark have been preserved. The synagogue is already being used for cultural purposes, bringing together architectural history and contemporary cultural life.

Routes between Sivá Brada and Dreveník

For an active exploration, the educational trail from Sivá Brada to Dreveník passes through Spišské Podhradie and ends in the Dreveník National Nature Reserve. The route connects the landscape features mentioned above with the town and makes Spišské Podhradie part of a larger network of trails. Another option is the blue cycling route from Spišské Podhradie to Pavľany. It is 15.4 kilometres long. This allows you to distinguish between an educational trail ending in the nature reserve and a clearly marked cycling tour covering a specified distance.

Spišský Jeruzalem and Spišská Kapitula

The historic pilgrimage site of Spišský Jeruzalem extends from the Cathedral of St Martin in Spišská Kapitula to the Chapel of the Holy Cross on Sivá Brada. This spatial layout broadens the view beyond individual buildings to a religiously shaped landscape. In Spišská Kapitula, St Martin’s Cathedral acquired its monumental form as a three-nave building with two towers between 1245 and 1275.
