Granč-Petrovce: Churches, Travertine and Cycling Route

Granč-Petrovce combines sacred architectural history with a distinctive travertine landscape and a clearly designated cycling route. The village has two churches of St. Martin with different historical backgrounds; Sobotisko lies to the west above the village, while the blue-marked cycling route 2710 runs through Granč-Petrovce.

St. Martin in Two Historical Forms

The new Church of St. Martin was completed in 1994 after a 16-month construction period. Its 25-metre-high tower is a landmark of the church and the municipality of Granč-Petrovce. Inside, there is a dominant wooden relief of St. Martin. The church thus represents a more recent architectural layer of the village.

Granč-Petrovce is also home to the Renaissance Church of St. Martin, built in 1626. Its furnishings include a Renaissance side altar dedicated to St. Martin from 1635. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Manor House and the History of Štefan Petróczy

The Petróczyovský Manor House stands in the southwest of Granč-Petrovce. It was originally a late Baroque building from the second half of the 18th century. Štefan Petróczy is associated with the building: the prominent pioneer of helicopter construction was born in the manor house in 1876 and worked in Austria. The manor house currently houses an elementary art school. Architectural history, a technical biography and a present-day educational institution thus come together in this place.

Sobotisko: Travertine and Archaeology

The Sobotisko natural monument site, a travertine hill, lies west above Granč-Petrovce. Travertine is a limestone that forms from mineral-rich water. The protected area west of Granč-Petrovce was designated in 1987 to protect a partly forested, geomorphologically distinctive travertine hill. The protected travertine hill is also an important archaeological site. The finds mentioned include stone tools and traces of hearths from the Middle Paleolithic. The Middle Paleolithic belongs to the Middle Stone Age. Sobotisko therefore represents not only a striking geological formation but also a human past reaching far back in time.

Cycling Route and Educational Trail in the Surrounding Area

For cyclists, the blue-marked cycling route 2710 offers a specifically designated route option. It passes through Granč-Petrovce and forms part of a total 19.4-kilometre route between Dúbrava and Vyšný Slavkov.

The Sivá Brada–Dreveník educational trail is also located in the surrounding area. It focuses on natural history, nature conservation, culture and history and is suitable for hikers seeking a moderate level of difficulty. The cultural character of the area is complemented by its religious tradition: the faithful of Granč-Petrovce celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary every year with an indulgence celebration.
