Slovenský Grob – Churches, Cycle Paths and Goose Tradition

Slovenský Grob combines sacred buildings, developed cycling connections and a goose tradition closely associated with the town. Historic churches and chapels, cycle paths between districts and municipalities, as well as roast goose or duck, which you can enjoy all year round, shape the townscape in different ways.

Churches and Chapels in the Town

The Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist is the centrepiece of the local sacred buildings. It dates back to 1635 and has three bells. This makes it one of the defining historical landmarks of Slovenský Grob. Another special feature is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, dating from 1790. It is located on the quiet outskirts of the town and is surrounded by a row of trees. For centuries, believers have made a pilgrimage to this chapel every year in mid-August. In addition to its history, this date gives the building a religious significance that has been passed down to the present day. The two chapels are located in different parts of the town: the Baroque Chapel of St. Anne stands in the centre, while the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows is on the outskirts. In the central part of Slovenský Grob, you will also encounter an oversized gilded goose statue. It refers to a theme that is present in Slovenský Grob not only in culinary terms but also in the townscape.

Cycle Paths between Districts and Municipalities

There are several connections for exploring the area by bicycle. In 2021, a new 322-metre-long cycle route was built. It extended the existing cycle paths from the Zátišie district and currently improves access to the sports area and pump track. The route is therefore particularly interesting for visitors who want to connect the town and its leisure facilities via short routes. The Slovenský Grob–Viničné cycle route is more than 2.1 kilometres long and connects the two municipalities. Bicycle stands were installed along this route next to a bus stop. Another connection was created as early as 2017: the 1,000-metre-long cycle path connects the Malý raj and Zátišie districts with the original centre of Slovenský Grob. The routes differ in length and course: one connects municipalities, while another links districts with the original centre.

Goose Tradition and Local Cuisine

Slovenský Grob has a particular focus on its local goose tradition. It is based on original recipes tried and tested over decades and on preparation in clay pots. In Slovenský Grob, you can enjoy roast goose or duck all year round. The Cech husacinárov Slovenského Grobu was founded to preserve this culinary tradition. The combination of recipes, preparation methods and organised preservation makes goose cuisine an independent part of the town’s profile.
