Dubová: Hiking at Kukla and local history
Accommodation in Dubová
Dubová can be explored through a variety of themes: Kukla is home to a wooden lookout tower, the village’s churches tell a long history, and the surrounding area preserves traces of ancient seas. Hiking trails, religious sites, geological exhibits and local customs offer different starting points for planning your stay.
Hiking and views at Kukla
A three-hour hiking route leads from Zochova chata via Medvedia skala, Tri kopce and Mount Kukla to Dubová. This gives you the starting point, intermediate stops and destination; the stated duration refers to this route. On Kukla, above Dubová, a 12-metre-high wooden lookout tower stands at an elevation of 564 metres. From there, the view stretches far across the Little Carpathians. The three hours describe the route, while the elevations distinguish between the mountain and the tower—two different reference points for planning your outing.
Near the lookout tower, there is a developed fire pit for grilling, with benches. This combines the views with a specific place to take a break. As visitor facilities can change, it is advisable to check their condition before your visit.
Churches and religious sites
Dubová’s original parish church was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and was already standing there in 1332. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was built in 1907 in the Neo-Romanesque style, on the site of an earlier Gothic chapel. It is in good condition and serves its religious purpose. These two accounts bring together different chapters of the village’s history: the early parish church and the construction of the Church of the Rosary in the early 20th century.
Above Dubová, on the slope of the Little Carpathians at Vítkov vŕšok, there is a Marian grotto with benches and thanksgiving plaques. Also on Vítkov vŕšok, the faithful built a Calvary in 1967 through their own efforts. The grotto and Calvary also make the place interesting for travellers who want to explore religious landmarks and their local history.
Geology and local experiences
The “More pod našimi nohami” exhibition at Dubová’s sports complex offers an interactive introduction to the history of seas millions of years old, traces of which remain in fossils found in the surrounding area. It is also accessible to blind and visually impaired visitors. Another geological point of interest is an interactive educational table near the community hall on Sokolska Street, at the entrance to the sports field. It presents the municipality and its geological treasures.
Športové letisko Dubová, the local sports airfield, offers another way to experience the Little Carpathians: activities available there include scenic flights over the mountains, adventure flights, parachute jumps and a flight school. Offers may change, so check in advance which flights are currently available.
Traditions and flavours
Traditional Dubovské sciskanice are made from baked potato dough and served as an accompaniment at wine tastings. The annual scískaníc festival helps preserve local traditions and customs. The dish and the festival offer two different glimpses into local culture: one through a culinary tradition, the other through a recurring celebration. As individual event dates may change, check the date before your trip.
A specific glimpse of a Hody celebration comes from 6 October 2024: a procession in traditional dress accompanied the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary to the church. At the agape that followed in the church garden, sciskanice were served. This dated example adds a connection with church festivities to the general culinary tradition, without specifying an annual date.
