Modra: Ceramics, Wine and History

Modra combines preserved evidence of its history with a ceramic tradition that remains visible to this day and a long-established wine culture. Those who want to get to know the town not only through individual sights but also through its defining themes will find museums, historic buildings, workshops and distinctive landscape viewpoints here.

Museums of Štúr, Ceramics and Craftsmanship

The Ľudovít Štúr Museum dedicates its collections to Ľudovít Štúr as well as to the history and cultural and ethnographic traditions of Modra and the surrounding region. It presents four permanent exhibitions to visitors. The museum is housed in the Emresz House, where Štúr died in 1856. A visit therefore combines an exploration of the subject matter with a specific historic building.

Another focus is majolica. The majolica tradition in Modra dates back to the establishment of a ceramic industry training institution in 1833. At Slovenská ľudová majolika Modra, visitors can take part in workshops. The history is therefore not confined to an exhibition but can also be experienced through hands-on work with the material and the production process.

The Ignác Bizmayer Gallery displays, among other works, figurative ceramic pieces by Ignác Bizmayer, Jozef Franko and Marián Liška. Its exhibition venue is a historic structure that was part of a defensive bastion. In addition, the Museum of Slovak Ceramic Sculpture presents the history of Modra ceramics as well as traditions connected with life in the guild organization. Together, these places reveal different sides of the ceramic heritage: individual works, craftsmanship, historical development and traditions associated with guild life.

City Gate and Wine Culture

Of Modra’s three city gates, Horná brána is the only one that has survived to this day. The gate is occasionally accessible during exhibitions and events. This is a distinctive feature with a clear reservation: access is tied to these occasions and is not described as a general sightseeing opportunity available at any time.

Pivnica u Pradeda is also part of the town’s local character. The historic wine cellar is located in the center of Modra and looks back on more than 500 years of tradition. Guided wine tastings are offered there. Those who want to discover the town’s wine heritage will therefore find an explicitly guided tasting experience in a cellar steeped in history.

Archaeological Traces and Landscape

Zámčisko is an archaeological site with the remains of a Slavic hillfort dating from the late 9th century. Below Zámčisko there is also a 200 m-long mining tunnel that is freely accessible. The two details describe different historical traces: above, the remains of an early fortification; below, a preserved tunnel.

Natural highlights include Tisové skaly, a nature monument with the fifth level of protection. The lookout tower was built in 2018 on the site of an older lookout tower and offers an excellent view of the surrounding area. A 4.96 km-long cycle path complements the offering for outdoor orientation. It is mostly paved and has rest areas as well as bicycle repair stations.
