Veľká Ves between Skalica and church art
Accommodation in Veľká Ves
Veľká Ves lies below Mount Skalica and combines a distinctive landscape with a long church history. The municipality is located in the northern part of the Lučenecká kotlina, in the valley of a left-bank tributary of the Kriváň stream. Its cadastral area ranges from 210 to 340 metres above sea level. In the north, the deserted settlement of Konteska belongs to Veľká Ves. Churches, landscape, and the climb up Skalica offer different themes for your stay.
Landscape and views near Konteska
The location below Skalica gives the area a clear topographical landmark. Konteska, the deserted settlement to the north, is another place to keep in mind when finding your way around Veľká Ves. There is an observation tower at Konteska. In good visibility, the view from there extends to the Mátra Mountains on the Hungarian border, to Lučenec and Kalinovo, and to the surrounding municipalities. Visibility conditions can affect the panorama.
In 2025, the observation tower was described as accessible on foot, by bicycle, or by car. Check local conditions before your visit. Following its legal approval, the tower opened to the general public in July 2025; check in advance whether access is still available. A pavilion at Konteska was opened on 6 June 2015. Check its condition and access on site.
Nature is also part of the area’s character: wild geese and snipes nest in the grey oak forests and adjacent fields. Their presence may vary seasonally. Alongside the viewpoint, the landscape and its seasonal changes are therefore attractions in their own right.
Church art and history
The Evangelical church in Veľká Ves was built in 1772 as a towerless Baroque-Classical tolerance church. The tower was added in 1802. A wooden gallery on carved columns runs along three sides of the main space. Its coffered balustrade features scenes from the life of Christ painted on wood. The architecture can be appreciated both through its construction history and through the details of its interior.
The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. If you would like to see the interior, check in advance whether a visit is possible. The older church history goes back much further: between 1332 and 1337, Veľká Ves had a parish with the priest Peter at St. Nicholas Church. On 8 July 2000, Mons. Eduard Kojnok, Bishop of Rožňava, consecrated the foundation stone of the new Church of the Holy Family. These dates mark different periods in the local religious history.
The climb and local traditions
The climb up Skalica took place on 6 January 2017 as its second edition and on 6 January 2018 as its third edition. These two dates confirm the event was held in those years, but do not guarantee a future edition. If you would like to plan your visit around a current date, check whether another event has been announced.
Beyond its churches, Veľká Ves also has a historic craft tradition: former trades included pottery and decorative wheelwrighting. The Brdárska kapustnica was held with competing teams in 2018; another edition took place in 2022. These individual events offer a specific glimpse into local traditions without implying an annual recurrence.
You can choose your destination according to your interests, while checking current access conditions and event dates separately for the specific excursions you plan.
