Ozdín Between a Stream, Forest and Vrch Hrad

Ozdín combines a distinctive local history with paths leading into a varied landscape. A particularly clear introduction to the surroundings is the hiking trail from Ozdín to Vrch Hrad. It leads to the 589-meter-high mountain through nature rich in diverse animal and plant life. There is a fire pit beside the shelter along the trail. Thus, both the landscape and a specific place to rest are part of the experience of this route.

Ozdín lies in the valley of a right-bank tributary of the Ipeľ. The surrounding area has deciduous forests with abundant wildlife. These two aspects give the village a distinctly scenic setting, without reducing the surroundings to a single excursion destination. Ozdín can be reached by bus.

Church, Bell Tower and Traces in the Village Center

The Protestant church in Ozdín was built in 1813 on the site of a Gothic sacred building from the 15th century. Its massive tower has a Gothic core. Inside, the Neoclassical altar bears a painting of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane by František Gyurkovits.

Below the Protestant church stands a large oak tree estimated to be 500 years old. Another distinctive detail can be found in the village center near the municipal office: a wooden mill stands there in a stone-lined stream. The wooden bell tower of Ozdín was created as early as 1784 as a work of folk craftsmanship. Together with the church and the oak tree, it forms a village scene in which buildings, craftsmanship and nature can be perceived in close proximity.

Ozdín Castle as a Hiking Destination

Ozdín Castle dates back to the 13th century. Today, the area around its ruins provides space for hiking and picnics. Access from the Protestant church is via a walkable forest path; the climb takes about 45 minutes. This makes it possible to combine the castle with a separate excursion starting in the village, while the route also leads through the forest. Those who want to experience historic places not only in the village center but also in their natural surroundings will find a distinctly different perspective here from visiting the church.

Local Customs Throughout the Year

Ozdín preserves several customs that characterize the village beyond its individual buildings. Every winter, local feather-plucking gatherings take place, where participants make feather dusters. Hot tea with rum and corn served with poppy seeds, nuts or sugar are offered. Every year, Ozdín also maintains the tradition of putting up maypoles and taking them down again.

The climb to Vrch Hrad is also part of Children's Day in Ozdín. A fire is lit to mark the end of the Second World War. These events and customs show Ozdín as a place whose cultural characteristics lie not only in historic buildings but also in recurring communal activities.
