Breznička: Churches, Ipeľ Landscape and Cycle Routes

Breznička lies at the confluence of the Banský potok and the Ipeľ River. The village thus combines a distinctive river landscape with churches from different periods, historic hillforts and named cycle routes. For a trip to Slovakia, this is an especially good place to understand how closely natural surroundings, regional history and local culture are connected.

Churches and historical traces

The Evangelical church in Breznička was built in 1862 in the late Classicist style. It is a late Classicist hall church; the tower stands in front of the main façade and dates from 1882. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary provides a different architectural accent. It was built between 1781 and 1785 in the late Baroque style and consecrated on 11 September 1785. Stone statues of Saints Peter and Paul stand beside its tower. The tower still contains a set of bells acquired in 1797, dedicated to the Most Holy Name of Jesus and Mary. The furnishings also include a Classicist high altar from 1786 and a painting of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary from 1807. The archaeological traces also span several eras. The nearby small Hrádok hillfort site lies about 1.2 kilometres south of Breznička on a wooded ridge above the Ipeľ. It has two ditches and an arched rampart. Atypical prehistoric pottery from the Bronze Age Kyjatice culture, dating approximately from the 10th to the 8th century BC, was found there. The Intravilán hillfort on the eastern edge of Breznička has an oval layout, a ditch and pottery finds from the 12th to the 14th century.

Ipeľ floodplains and protected nature

Near Breznička, the Ipeľ forms a pronounced river bend. At this point, its floodplain narrows to 500 metres and takes on a crescent-shaped or sigmoid form. In a preserved, meandering section of the Ipeľ in the cadastral area of Breznička, the adjacent meadows provide a habitat for the protected snake’s-head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris). The Ipeľská niva near Breznička was designated as a private protected area. The landscape features mentioned there include Carpathian oak-hornbeam forests, swampy alder forests and the vegetation of shallow standing waters. Two protected pedunculate oaks complement this natural setting. One pedunculate oak near Breznička has a trunk circumference of 379 centimetres and is 16 metres tall. West of Breznička, in the hamlet of Močiar, stands another protected pedunculate oak that is approximately 350 years old and was placed under protection in 1996. The differing figures refer to two named trees and should therefore be considered separately.

Cycling, folklore and regional cuisine

There are several differently described options for cyclists. Route 5609 from Breznička to Kotmanová is 24.7 kilometres long, marked in green and classified as difficult. Its route includes sections on asphalt, paved paths, trails, and field and forest roads. Route 5609 also runs from Červeň to Breznička, where it continues above the cemetery on forest and field roads. A cycling educational trail from Lučenec via Poltár and Breznička to Málinec also passes through the village. It features easy to moderately difficult terrain and is connected with marked hiking trails. The regularly held Breznický Majáles is co-organised by the municipality. The folklore and sports day includes the raising of a maypole, performances by folklore groups and heligonka players, as well as sports activities for children, young people and adults. Local cuisine in Breznička and the surrounding area includes Parovec, Nálesník and Fučka. For Parovec, the liquid produced during fermentation is boiled with water, millet and salt. Nálesník is a potato lokša made from dough containing potatoes, similar to the dough used for Halušky. Fučka consists of mashed potatoes mixed with flour.
