Vieska: Village Culture, the Malý Dunaj and Cycling Routes

Vieska is located in the Danubian Lowland in the central part of Žitný ostrov. The village combines a rural historical structure with landscape links to the Malý Dunaj, protected natural areas and signposted cycling routes. Landscape along the Malý Dunaj

The cadastral territory of Blatná lúka in Vieska extends to the Malý Dunaj. It also includes the Klátovské rameno, or its former river channel, which today does not have a continuous water surface. The Malý Dunaj is bordered by woodland; some of its meanders contain contiguous floodplain forest areas. This combination of river, woodland and floodplains shapes the village’s connection to the landscape.

The protection requirements of the Klátovské rameno national nature reserve must be observed in the planning area of Vieska. The European site of importance SKUEV0822 Malý Dunaj also borders the planning area directly. This makes a clear distinction important when planning a trip: although Vieska is situated in a landscape connected with the river and nature, the protected areas mentioned also provide a special natural setting.

Historic Village Character and Small Monuments

Vieska was first mentioned in 1322 under the name Kysfeuldi. Until the middle of the 19th century, the village was an aristocratic settlement; the more prominent families who owned property in Vieska included the Nagyovci. In the oldest built-up areas along Hlavná and Veľká streets, the rural historical character and historic layout are intended to be preserved.

Several individual cultural landmarks complement this village character. The Pietà sculpture ensemble at 154 Hlavná Street depicts a seated Madonna holding the dead Christ in her arms. A Pietà sculpture ensemble at the junction of Športová, Agátová and Ružová streets near the sports field is dated 1898. The wayside chapel at 60 Hlavná Street contains a statue of Ružencová Panna Mária. The original wayside chapel dates from 1892 and was reconstructed in 1995.

The cemetery also preserves several dated monuments. The main cross dates from 1863 and was restored in 1991. The memorial to the soldiers who fell in the Second World War was erected in 1992; the names of 18 fallen residents of Vieska are carved into it. Cycling and the Water Landscape

Two different cycling route descriptions are documented for active excursions. The signposted Galantský cyklookruh runs along an existing field track through the territory of Vieska. This should be distinguished from cycle route 5232, which runs through Vieska along a 2.4-kilometre section. Thus, there is both a circuit through the area and a shorter, specifically designated route through the village.

The local landscape also includes the Štrkovisko Vieska fishing water. It covers 1.5 hectares and has a stable water level. Together with the Malý Dunaj, the floodplain forest areas and the historic streets, Vieska thus offers a travel experience that combines village culture, a flat river landscape and cycling.
