Váhovce between the Váh landscape and local history

Váhovce combines its proximity to the Váh River with a tranquil cultural landscape and clearly visible traces of local history. The town is particularly interesting for your trip to Slovakia if you would like to combine natural surroundings, cycling and smaller historic sights. Váhovce therefore reveals not only individual buildings, but also the close relationship between settlement, river and water management.

The Váh Landscape and Protected Nature

Váhovce lies in the immediate vicinity of the Váh, which is a landscape-defining and landscape-forming element here. Most of the municipality lies on the alluvial ridge of the right bank of the Váh. The Vodné dielo Kráľová waterworks, built along the river’s lower course, is now located there. The area’s elevations range from 118 to 124 m above sea level.

The area around Váhovce is part of the Natura 2000 site and bird protection area SKCHVU010 Kráľová. The supraregional ecological corridor NRBk1 Váh also extends into the cadastral area. The Kráľová bird protection area includes aquatic habitats that provide suitable conditions for the black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) to breed and survive. Those interested in river landscapes and birdlife will find a connection with nature here that clearly differs from a purely local visit focused on historic buildings.

Cycling on the Embankment and in the Municipality

One specific option for route planning is a 4 km paved section on the top of the embankment in Váhovce’s cadastral area. It forms part of a 17 km cycling route from Horný Čepeň via Sereď, Dolná Streda and Váhovce, Kaskády to Šaľa. The route can therefore be viewed as part of a longer connection, while the paved section provides a separate point of reference for planning.

Two cycling routes with a total length of 11.9 km are also listed for Váhovce. The red Vážska cyklomagistrála 002 cycling route is recorded as 5.1 km long, while the blue Okolo VN Kráľová 2207 cycling route is 6.8 km long. There is no direct road connection from the R1 expressway to the town: the R1 runs north of Váhovce through the cadastral area. You should take this into account when planning your journey.

Church, Monuments and Local History

The late Baroque church Kostol sv. Mikuláša biskupa is a prominent feature of the townscape. It was built in 1778 on the site of an older church that had already been mentioned in 1669. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Inside, it has a Neoclassical high altar with an image of Saint Nicholas, as well as Neoclassical side altars dedicated to the Holy Trinity and Christ on the Mount of Olives. For visitors interested in culture, the building therefore offers several clearly distinguishable points of interest in terms of both period and subject matter.

Other memorial sites include the statue of Saint Florian. It was erected in 1827 to commemorate a major fire in 1824. Historically, on 4 May, the feast day of Saint Florian, a procession led to this statue; the day was observed as a vow of faithfulness to Saint Florian. The Pomník hrdinov war memorial dates from the 20th century and commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. This historical picture is complemented by a Neoclassical stone wayside cross from 1793.

The river’s former use is also part of the town’s history: there were watermills on the Váh in Váhovce. Together with the church, wayside cross and monuments, these traces help illustrate how varied the themes of a stay can be.
