Slovenská Kajňa at Malá Domaša Reservoir

Slovenská Kajňa lies in the southern part of the Ondava Highlands and on the shore of Malá Domaša Reservoir. The locality therefore combines a clearly defined landscape with marked trails, a mountain bike route, bodies of water, seasonal birdwatching, and individual cultural sites. For you, this creates a destination whose special features are revealed more through specific routes and natural details than through a long list of attractions.

Landscape by the Water

In the warm floodplain of the Ondava within the municipality, rezeda farbiarska, nevädza rozložená, kotúč poľný, and ibiš lekársky have been recorded, among others. The legally protected plant species svíb drieňový also occurs within the municipality of Slovenská Kajňa. In the waters of the Ondava near the reservoir and downstream, stolístok klasnatý, škripinec jazerný, šarina morská, and červenec kučeravý grow, among others. Domaša Reservoir complements this plant life with a seasonal observation opportunity: During the spring and autumn migrations, flocks of wild geese can be observed there. During the breeding season, you can also see western marsh harriers, grey herons, purple herons, white storks, and black storks at the reservoir. The two periods are therefore clearly distinct: Bird migration is mentioned for spring and autumn, while observing the listed breeding birds is tied to the breeding season.

Hiking, Cycling, and Running

The yellow-marked hiking trail 8802 leads from Slovenská Kajňa to Pohlodok and is 5.5 km long. The route thus provides a clearly named hiking connection with a specified length. For cyclists, the first section of the Domaša–Slanské vrchy route begins at the municipal office in Slovenská Kajňa. The entire route is suitable for mountain bikes. Another way to explore the surroundings along a defined route is the Kajňanská desiatka run, which takes place every year in Slovenská Kajňa. Its route leads from Slovenská Kajňa below Domaša Reservoir and around the balancing reservoir, through Malá Domaša, and back to Slovenská Kajňa. It therefore differs clearly from the 5.5 km hiking trail and from the course of the Domaša–Slanské vrchy cycling route. Fishing is permitted year-round at VVN M. Domaša Reservoir. The water surface of this reservoir covers 105 ha and extends from the weir in the municipality of Slovenská Kajňa to the dam.

Church and Local Custom

The Church of Najsvätejšej Trojice is part of the local cultural heritage. It was built in 1925 on the site of an older church in the Historicist style. Its tower features pseudo-Gothic elements, meaning that both the Historicist style and a specific architectural detail can be identified in the same building. The St. Nicholas arrival celebration is also part of the local annual cycle. It takes place every year in Slovenská Kajňa accompanied by an angel and a devil. This custom complements the permanently visible church with a recurring event clearly associated with the locality.
