Kvakovce at Domaša Reservoir: Water, Forests and Cycling
Kvakovce between the Reservoir, Forests and Culture
The most prominent landmark associated with Kvakovce is the Domaša–Dobrá recreational area. It lies in the cadastral territory of Kvakovce on the Domaša Reservoir and combines water-based experiences with paths through a heavily forested landscape.
Water Activities at Domaša–Dobrá
The Domaša–Dobrá recreational area has beach volleyball courts, a tennis court and a mini-golf course. Water sports such as sailing and windsurfing are practiced on the reservoir; the area is also suitable for swimming and fishing. Paddleboard rental further expands the range of activities on the water. This means the options range from relaxing on the shore to activities in which the reservoir itself is the main focus.
A special way to get to know Domaša is the educational boat trip on the reservoir. It starts at the Domaša Dobrá recreational area, heads towards Valkov and then continues to the dam. The boat then returns to the port. The trip takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. The approximate duration is just as important as the specified route sequence, as it describes a complete excursion on the water rather than merely a short crossing.
Cycling Route, Hiking Trails and the Way to Trepec
Domaša–Dobrá is also a starting point for various routes on land. The entire Domaša–Slanské vrchy cycling route is suitable for mountain bikes. This route includes a 4.5 km section from the Domaša Dobrá recreational area to Kvakovce. Those interested in cycling can therefore include a specific connection between the recreational area and Kvakovce in their travel plans without reducing the entire route to the same type of terrain.
The Domaša–Dobrá area is surrounded by extensive forested areas and a network of marked hiking trails. For a cultural detour, the easiest way to the church in Trepec leads from the Domaša–Dobrá recreational area via Trepecká cesta. The church is the only surviving immovable monument of the flooded village of Trepec. A traditional indulgence festival is held in the church every year in July.
Churches, Archaeology and Lakeside Culture
In Kvakovce itself, the Roman Catholic church dates from 1774. It provides a historical accent alongside the newer recreational activities at the reservoir. An extensive urn cemetery dating from the Early to Late Bronze Age offers an even older glimpse into the history of the landscape. It was excavated in the settlement of Dobrá, in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Kvakovce, when the water level of the Domaša Reservoir fell.
A small stage and a chapel have also been established along the Domaša–Dobrá waterfront. Around the recreational area, you will therefore encounter not only sports and swimming facilities, but also smaller cultural sites and traces of different eras.
