Svidník District combines Ukrainian cultural history, memorial sites of the Dukla battlefield, cycling routes and traditional events. Several different experiences are concentrated in Svidník itself, while Bodružal and Roztoky offer additional destinations for those interested in culture and landscapes. If you are looking for accommodation, it is therefore worth deciding on the focus of your trip first: museums and wellness, historic sites, cycling or a stay under the stars.

Cultural History and Museums in Svidník

The SNM Museum of Ukrainian Culture documents the fundamental stages of the cultural-historical and socioeconomic development of Ukrainians in Slovakia. The cultural-historical exhibition also provides an overview of the settlement, economic, social, nationalities and cultural-historical development from the earliest times to the present. In addition, the open-air ethnographic exhibition covers 11 hectares and includes around 50 examples of folk architecture.

Another focus is the Dezider Milly Gallery, housed in a Baroque mansion from the 18th century. It presents the development of Ukrainian folk and professional art in Slovakia from the 16th century to the present. The gallery also includes an icon collection that is among the oldest and most valuable collections of the Museum of Ukrainian Culture in Svidník. Those interested in military history will find an exhibition in the Svidník department of the Military Historical Institute covering the period immediately before and during the First World War, the interwar period and the Second World War, with a focus on the Carpathian-Dukla operation.

Historic Sites, Church and Memorial Landscape

The Monument to the Soviet Army and the adjacent military cemetery form a prominent ensemble of the Dukla battlefield in the Svidník area. The long-distance hiking trail “Cesta hrdinov SNP” also runs through Svidník onward to Dukla. In Bodružal stands the Greek Catholic Church of Saint Nicholas, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008 together with seven other wooden churches of the Carpathian Arc. The church dates from 1658 and is designed as a three-part log structure with a richly articulated shingle roof and three towers rising westward.

Cycling, Circular Routes and Dark Skies

For shorter trips, Lesopark Dukla offers a 1.2-kilometre small circular route and a large circular route of approximately 2.2 kilometres. Information panels focus on regional wildlife, trees, plants, fungi and birds. Cyclists can choose between different routes: the “Kapišovská Slučka” is a 12.7-kilometre, less demanding circular cycling route. It starts in Svidník, passes the statue of Army General L. Svoboda, heads towards the Vyšný Komárnik border crossing and continues to Kapišová. The demanding “Okolo Hvezdárne” circular route is 31.2 kilometres long and runs from Svidník via Nižný Orlík, Vyšný Orlík and Nižný Mirošov to Roztoky.

Roztoky Dark Sky Park appeals to visitors who want to focus their stay on astronomical observations. It has an observatory used for short and multi-day observing stays, as well as one of the most powerful telescopes in Slovakia. The observation tower with accommodation above Svidník is easily accessible year-round to hikers, cyclists, cross-country skiers, families with children and older visitors.

Pierogi, Folk Culture and Wellness

The Day of Folk Traditions and Pierogi at the Svidník open-air museum takes place annually; in 2025, it was held there for the 30th time as part of the Slovak Days of European Cultural Heritage. At the pierogi festival, visitors can experience the preparation of this traditional dish live. Pierogi are described there as a local rustic speciality. Traditional folkloric and ethnographic celebrations have also been held in the open-air ethnographic exhibition since 1986 under the name “Poklady ľudu”.
