Sabinov District: Hiking, Nature and Culture

Sabinov District combines short educational trails, marked hikes, protected mountain landscapes and historic sites with thermal pools and winter sports. This gives you a region with a variety of excursion options: a forest trail approximately 1 kilometre long presents the traditional symbols of the Čergov in a playful way, while a marked route stretches for 13.8 kilometres. In addition, there are castles on rocks and mountain ridges, the pilgrimage site of Ľutina, listed burgher houses in Sabinov, and Lipany Thermal Park, which offers thermal pools year-round.

Hiking with Different Levels of Difficulty

The Čergov Educational and Recreational Trail is particularly well suited to a short nature and educational excursion. The approximately 1-kilometre forest trail includes playful and educational elements about the traditional symbols of the Čergov, including a shepherd's hut and a wolf's den. The easiest access is by the Drienica–Lysá chairlift; more experienced hikers can alternatively walk up the asphalt road. In addition to the winter season, the modernised SKI Lysá chairlift also operates in summer, usually on weekends. Drienica and the summit of Lysá are considered a popular destination for hikers and offer cyclists both recreational and challenging trail routes.

If you are looking for a longer route classified as easy, the marked Nižný Slavkov–Bišar–Tichý Potok route provides clear guidance: it is 13.8 kilometres long and takes a total of 3 hours and 50 minutes. For a shorter walk, the St. Martin Educational Trail, with seven stations about the life of Saint Martin, is a suitable choice. It is easy and suitable for all age groups.

Nature Reserves, Flower Meadows and Ponds

The landscape contains several clearly distinct natural areas. The Čergovský Minčol National Nature Reserve extends into the cadastral territory of Kamenica. The private SPR Vlčia nature reserve, considered the first private nature reserve in Slovakia, is located in the cadastral territory of Olejníkov. The Bišar Nature Reserve protects montane flower meadows where the rare orange lily (Lilium bulbiferum) grows.

The ponds of Uzovský Šalgov offer a different nature experience. A nature trail explains their history and technical features, as well as the animals and plants found there. The ponds are used for controlled fishing and are among the important bodies of water for wildlife in northern Šariš. Birds use them during migration and for nesting.

Castles, Pilgrimage and Regional History

Kamenica Castle stands on a high limestone rock above the village of Kamenica and was built in the 13th century; it probably served as a royal hunting castle. From Kamenica, a well-marked footpath with information panels leads to the history and nature of the village and the castle hill. A less demanding, yellow-marked route leads from Lúčky via Potoky. Hanigovský (New) Castle lies above Hanigovce on a side ridge of the Čergov Mountains. A marked trail reaches it from Hanigovce and Ľutina.

Ľutina combines religious and ethnographic impressions. The pilgrimage complex includes chapels, an open-air museum of wooden churches, and a wooden church with an observation tower. The open-air museum displays replicas of wooden churches from Slovakia and the neighbouring border regions in one location. In Sabinov, thirty burgher houses around Námestie slobody are protected as historical monuments. In Brezovica, elements of folk architecture and traditional crafts remain alive to this day.

Thermal Pools, Skiing and Local Life

For relaxation regardless of the season, Lipany Thermal Park offers thermal pools, a relaxation zone and a family-friendly atmosphere year-round. Ski Búče offers 4.5 kilometres of easy, intermediate and difficult downhill runs for families with children as well as advanced skiers.

Local life is also part of the character of the area. Sabinov Town Days, including the Market of Sabinov, take place every year in June. On 19 May 2026, the city of Sabinov officially took over the completed project “CYKLOCHODNÍK HRADOBNÁ ULIČKA SABINOV”; the southern edge of the central monument zone was extensively revitalised as part of the project. For further orientation around the area, Drienica, Lipany and Sabinov are available. More destinations at the same regional level can be found in Kežmarok District, Humenné District, Poprad District, Levoča District and Stropkov District.
