Drienica – Hiking, Cycling and Čergov
The cadastral area of Drienica lies beneath the southern slopes of the Čergov Mountains and combines a distinctive forest landscape with marked hiking trails, cycling opportunities and cultural attractions in the village. The cadastral area ranges from 375 to 1,068 m in elevation. With 601.78 ha of forest land, nature shapes the character of the surroundings; at the same time, Drienica is part of the Čergov Special Protection Area, a 35,849.71 ha bird protection area. It protects habitats of bird species of European importance as well as habitats of migratory bird species.
Hiking trails between Drienica and Čergov
For a manageable hike, the recommended Okruh Besná circuit is one specific option: it is 5.5 km long, with a stated walking time of 2:02 hours. Those who prefer a longer connection can use the blue-marked hiking trail 2845 in the municipality's cadastral area. It runs from Škola v prírode Drienica via the Besná saddle to Podbaranie.
Another marked route passes through several places and over several mountain ridges: the green-marked hiking trail 5708 runs from Sabinov via Červená voda and Lysá to the Čergov saddle and onwards to Hertník. This makes it possible to compare different routes in the Čergov area without reducing the landscape to a single circuit.
Summer offers for bicycles and hiking boots
There are also various ways to get around the area on active summer days. In summer, SKI LYSÁ offers chairlift-assisted mountain biking up to Lysá and over the summits of Čergov. During this season, the chairlift transports visitors uphill with bicycles or wearing trekking shoes. In addition, SKI LYSÁ has three new singletrack trails. Those choosing accommodation in Drienica can therefore distinguish, depending on their focus, between marked hiking trails, a cycling tour, and the lift and trail options mentioned there.
Cycle path along the Drienický potok Šomka
For a shorter route, there is a cycle path along the Drienický potok Šomka. It is 946 m long and 2.5 m wide, illuminated and marked with traffic signs. The newly built path is intended for cyclists and pedestrians. It therefore complements the longer hiking and mountain biking routes with a clearly described route for cycling and walking.
Sacred buildings in the village
In addition to its outdoor opportunities, Drienica also has independent cultural attractions. The Chrám Narodenia Presvätej Bohorodičky was completed in 1811 and dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a single-nave building with a porch tower set into the gabled façade.
The Kaplnka sv. Jána Evanjelistu was built in 1822 and extensively restored in 1998–1999. From 2000 onwards, the tradition of May liturgies associated with the blessing of the fields was resumed there. Thus, nature experiences and the village's sacred history stand side by side in Drienica: on the one hand, the routes range from a 5.5 km circuit to connections over the Čergov saddle; on the other hand, the church and chapel tell of the architectural and religious history of the village.
