Červený Kláštor combines monastic history, protected landscapes and various options for an active or culture-oriented stay. The village is located near the Dunajec Gorge, a protected area of Pieniny National Park. This makes Červený Kláštor a suitable base for a trip where nature experiences, historical impressions and relaxation at the spa can be enjoyed side by side.

On the Dunajec and through the Pieniny

A particularly characteristic experience is a rafting trip on the Dunajec. It begins in the municipality of Červený Kláštor, passes through the Dunajec Gorge and ends in the village of Lesnica. Along the way, traditional wooden rafts are the defining means of transport for this excursion. After the rafting trip, you can return to the starting point by shuttle, bicycle or on foot via the educational trail along the Dunajec. Depending on your plans, the experience can therefore be combined with a return journey or with activity along the river.

For hikers, the Prielom Dunajca educational trail provides another specific option. It begins at the entrance to the Dunajec Gorge, approximately 0.4 km below Červený Kláštor Monastery, and is 7.5 km long. Take this distance into account when planning your day. If you prefer to travel by bicycle, you can choose the Pieninská cesta. The cycling route connects Červený Kláštor with the Polish town of Szczawnica, offering a cross-border perspective on the region.

Monastic history and an unusual herbarium

Červený Kláštor Monastery was founded in 1319. Its history encompasses both the period of the Carthusians and that of the Camaldolese. The Červený Kláštor Museum also displays the herbarium of the “flying monk” Cyprián, dating from 1766. It contains 283 pressed plants described in five languages. A visit to the museum complements the monastery with an insight into a historical collection and also makes the site interesting for travellers who are less interested in sporting activities than in cultural and intellectual history.

The museum can be reached by car or bus. There is no rail service in Červený Kláštor. This information is relevant when planning your journey and comparing different means of transport. The local options can be clearly distinguished: the rafting trip follows the Dunajec, the cycling route leads to the Polish town of Szczawnica, and the museum focuses on the history and collections of the site.

Healing mineral water and a protected park

Kúpele Červený Kláštor Smerdžonka is also an important part of what defines Červený Kláštor. The spa uses its Smerdžonka healing mineral water to treat skin diseases, musculoskeletal disorders and liver diseases. As part of spa treatment, the water is used for partial or full baths.

In front of the monastery lies Pieninské lipy Park. The area is designated as a protected site and is home to 19 old, rare lime trees. Together with the nearby Dunajec Gorge, this creates a local landscape where historic buildings, distinctive trees and a protected river environment meet. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between several focuses: culture at the monastery and museum, activities on the water, on foot or by bicycle, and relaxation at the spa.
