Rusovce: Roman Heritage and Danube Floodplains

Rusovce combines Roman history, protected cultural landscapes and Danube floodplains within a small area. At its center is Antická Gerulata: In 2021, the site was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – The Danube Limes, Western Segment.” Choosing this destination is therefore not only about a single historic building, but about a place where archaeology, parkland and natural surroundings come together.

Gerulata and the History of Rusovce

Rusovce was designated a heritage conservation zone on October 1, 1990. The area is considered an important archaeological site documenting settlement from prehistoric times to the present day. The Antická Gerulata exhibition focuses on the construction of the fort and the lives of its inhabitants. The emphasis is on archaeological finds discovered there. Another way to explore the Roman fort is Virtuálna Gerulata: The virtual 3D model includes both a tour mode and a game mode.

The surroundings of the fort also add to the historical picture. Behind the Roman camp, the turrets of the neo-Gothic Rusovský kaštieľ rise above Rusovský Park. The château is located in the northern part of an English-style park. Rusovce also retains much of the original area of the renowned Hugo méntelep riding school. Those interested in the connection between the Roman past and the later history of the locality will therefore find several different points of reference here rather than just a single monument.

Park, Danube and Floodplain Forests

Rusovský Park stretches between a branch of the Danube and Balkánska cesta. The historic park at Rusovský kaštieľ transitions into floodplain forests along the Danube. The cadastral area of Rusovce extends into the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area; at the same time, the Dunajské luhy Natura 2000 site also includes Rusovce. It represents the main course of the Danube and its left bank with floodplain forests. Rusovské rameno is also among the natural landscapes of Rusovce. As a result, Rusovce is a popular and frequently visited recreational area. The natural aquatic habitats in Dunajské luhy provide suitable conditions for the breeding of several waterbird species.

Cycling Route, Bus Connection and Special Events

The Antická Gerulata site can be reached from the center of Bratislava by bus routes 90, 91 and 191, as well as by bicycle via the embankment leading from the city center. Rusovce is also suitable as a stop for cyclists who want to explore the remains of the Roman fort of Gerulata.

The Roman Games add another cultural dimension. This annual festival in Rusovce features a Roman-themed program with workshops, films, lectures and historical activities. The local religious history is reflected in several smaller monuments: The Church of St. Mary Magdalene was built in 1662. Based on older materials, the origins of the Church of St. Vitus are dated to 1613. Pilgrims stopped at the Pietà statue in Rusovce on their way to the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Zeiselhof. The ensemble of the Column of the Most Holy Trinity dates from 1748.
