Jarovce combines nature and outdoor activities with cultural monuments and a Croatian tradition that has been preserved among some of its residents to this day. The Sysľovské polia educational trail provides a specific seasonal framework for planning your trip. Churches, a medieval ossuary and a Baroque estate reveal different historical facets of the town.

Sysľovské polia: Nature and Seasonal Educational Trail

The Sysľovské polia educational trail is open to pedestrians and cyclists every year from 1 July to 30 September. Motor vehicles are not permitted on it. The trail is intended for both recreation and education. If you plan to explore it on foot or by bike, schedule your visit within this period and check the information for the relevant year before travelling.

Sysľovské polia is also the last regular breeding ground of the great bustard in Slovakia; up to ten females breed there. This gives the area an independent significance as a breeding habitat, alongside its use as an educational trail. The two perspectives—outdoor activity on the seasonal trail and the area’s special role for the great bustard—offer different themes for your visit.

Cultural Monuments and Historical Traces

The Church of St. Nicholas in Jarovce is an immovable national cultural monument. The cemetery is also home to the medieval ossuary: an underground, circular stone structure. It was used for the respectful storage of human bones covered with earth. By the 15th to 16th centuries, it was no longer serving its original purpose. The ossuary’s form and former use add a specific historical practice of dealing with human remains to the picture of the town’s history.

The Baroque Jarovská bažantnica is protected primarily for its valuable historic landscaping. Historically, it was almost completely surrounded by a meander of a branch of the Danube, which was crossed by a two-arched stone bridge. The Bažantnica v Jarovciach is not open to the public.

Cultural Tradition and the Yearly Calendar

Among some of Jarovce’s residents, the Croatian language and ethnic identity have been preserved to this day. The tamburica is an important cultural symbol of the town. This tradition is a distinct facet of cultural life alongside the historic buildings.

A carnival parade takes place in Jarovce every year. If you would like to experience it, check the date for your travel year before your trip.

Recreation, Rowing and Cycling

The Veľký Zemník lake is used by rowers and sprint canoeists. Jarovecké rameno offers opportunities for recreation. For cyclists, the cross-border EuroVelo 13 route runs along the former border guard signal line on the Slovak side. You can cross between Slovakia and Austria at the Jarovce–Kittsee border crossing.
