Rimavská Baňa – Church, Nature Trail and Vŕšok Viewpoint
Accommodation in Rimavská Baňa
Rimavská Baňa combines an impressive sacred landscape with clearly distinguishable routes through the surrounding area. Above the village stands an early Gothic single-nave church built around 1300 and surrounded by a Renaissance defensive wall. In addition, there is the themed Gotická cesta route, a historical nature trail and hiking routes to Sinec and into the Stolické vrchy. This gives you several concrete options for choosing between culture, short viewpoints routes and longer route descriptions.
Church and Gotická cesta
Rimavská Baňa lies on the Gotická cesta. The themed route connects medieval churches with rare wall paintings; among them is the 13th-century Gothic church in Rimavská Baňa. Its furnishings make the church building noteworthy even apart from the outer defensive wall: inside are 14th-century medieval wall paintings depicting the so-called Legend of Saint Ladislaus. There is also a painted coffered ceiling dating from 1783.
Together with 11 other sacred monuments in the Gemer-Malohont region, the church is one of the recipients of the European Heritage Seal. Those who view Gotická cesta as a cultural connection between several places will therefore find in Rimavská Baňa a section where architectural history, wall painting and regional sacred monuments are closely interlinked.
Nature Trail with a Historical Focus
The SNP – Bojisko Rimavská Baňa nature trail extends for approximately 4.5 kilometres. It begins at information board point 1 by the SNP monument below the church and follows a circular route through neighbouring Rimavské Zalužany and over the Hrb elevation with information board 5 before returning to Rimavská Baňa. Its themes go beyond general landscape information: the nature trail explains the battles that took place there at the end of 1944 between insurgents and German units advancing from the south in the direction of Rimavská Sobota.
This makes it possible to combine a visit to the church with a circular route whose stops cover both the local area and a specific chapter in the region's history.
Views over the Rimava Valley
Another clearly described destination is the Vŕšok lookout tower, approximately 1 kilometre north of Rimavská Baňa. The route there involves around 120 metres of elevation gain and takes less than 20 minutes. From the lookout tower, the view extends across the Rimava Valley; Lehota nad Rimavicou lies to the west, Mount Tŕstie above Tisovec to the north, and to the south it reaches as far as Hungary.
The viewpoint can thus be combined with a short, specifically stated route, while the hiking routes from Rimavská Baňa to Sinec and into the Stolické vrchy open up further landscape directions. A longer route description leads from Rimavská Baňa via Lehota nad Rimavicou, the valley of the Studený potok, a forester's hut, Sinec at 830 metres, Železná tabla at 870 metres, Sinček and the Svarín Valley back to Rimavská Baňa.
Sinec and Local Traditions
Rimavská Baňa is also one of the starting points for the Výstup na Sinec event. The destination is the 917-metre summit of Sinec. The event thus points to the mountain as an independent destination, while the route described via Sinec at 830 metres and then Železná tabla at 870 metres gives a separate, detailed course.
The local annual cycle also includes a gathering of people born in Rimavská Baňa. It takes place every five years and complements the historical and landscape themes with a recurring connection to the local community.
