Nitra – opening of a new golf facility
There is no need to tell golf enthusiasts that the sport is becoming increasingly popular in Slovakia. For several years, this small and above all young country in the heart of Europe has been equipping itself with wonderful, unique golf courses. Golfing in Slovakia is not entirely new, either. Now, at the beginning of May, another golf park is opening, once again surprising visitors with its uniqueness.
The new golf facility is located near the municipality of Prievidza. For the opening event on 01.05.2011, the “green carpet” will quite literally be rolled out. This new golf course in Slovakia impresses with its Scottish style. It nestles in the attractive landscape along the Nitra, a river in Slovakia. The region around the River Nitra, and the municipalities of Prievidza and Sebedrazie, is already well known as a destination for relaxing holidays. For generations, families and leisure travellers have also been booking holiday apartments, holiday homes and attractive hotels in Slovakia here. At some point, the idea arose to build a golf course in Slovakia that would be equally welcoming to beginners and professional players. Nature designer and golf-course architect Tim Mackenzie was brought on board for the project. The world’s oldest and unique golf facility in Musselburgh, Scotland, was enlisted as a partner. Ideas and inspiration for bringing a piece of Scottish culture to Slovakia and combining it with golf were successfully put into practice. The first guests are eagerly awaited. Golf has a very long tradition in Slovakia. However, for decades the sport was reserved for the nobility, the wealthy and the beautiful.
The Nomá Nitra golf course is equipped with a training centre featuring a six-hole academy, the well-known driving range, the popular chipping and putting green, and another academy. The putting academy is sure to be a hit, too.
Golfing in Slovakia is unfortunately seasonal and dependent on the weather. This mountainous country enjoys around 220 sunny days a year. Nevertheless, each year the golf season is considered a success, running from late April to mid-October. Moderate prices also make golf attractive to everyone.
