Bear warning signs in Slovakia
Slovakia boasts some of the most impressive natural landscapes. Pristine national parks and vast stretches of unspoiled countryside are drawing increasing numbers of visitors who come to hike or enjoy other outdoor activities. But the country’s natural beauty also comes with hazards that visitors should know about so they can deal with them appropriately. It may sound more dramatic than it really is that the Slovak government is now warning visitors to the country about the brown bears that live there. Nevertheless, the warnings should be taken seriously and all precautions observed.
After all, it is visitors who enter the animals’ habitat, not the other way around. Well-known areas with heavy bear activity are therefore marked with warning signs. These provide the most important advice in case visitors do encounter these otherwise very shy animals. In that event, they should avoid making eye contact with the furry creatures. A calm retreat is also recommended. The warnings are provided in English for international visitors to the Slovak forests. Nevertheless, every tourist should also do thorough research before setting out, as it may already be too late once they arrive.
The bear situation in Slovakia is not really a problem for visitors. After all, there are fewer than 800 bears in the country. They are generally very shy and keep away from people. Encounters with the mostly local population have probably often been caused by people venturing into nature behaving inappropriately. Increasingly, people are entering bears’ territories. Of course, bears are also expanding their ranges to find more food. Litter left lying around and food that is carelessly stored can also attract the animals, just as they do in North American national parks. Recently, bears have even spread into Slovak cities. Despite the new warning signs, the situation has not necessarily become more dramatic. The Environment Ministry simply hopes that the signs will help raise awareness among visitors enjoying the outdoors.
