The mountains, rivers, lakes and forests in Slovakia are a kind of compensation for the lack of the sea which is given by nature by nature itself. Slovak people know the real value of this gift that is why they try to preserve it and even to multiply it. That is why there is a wide net of national parks in the country.
National parks in Slovakia have been created during the second part of the 20-th century. The first and the most well-known one is an intimate territory of a mountain massif the High Tatry. It was organized in 1948. This reserve is the most attended park in Slovakia nowadays. The way it is kept deserves a high estimation. Moreover the High Tatry is not only a reserve but also the most popular tourist region in Slovakia. There are the best mountain resorts of the country here, several hundreds kilometers of tourist paths are seen here. The High Tatry has excellent routes for a mountain bike and several climbing paths. The park includes the part of territories of the regions Liptovski, Mikulash, Poprad, Kezhmarok, Tverdoshin.
A national park Slovak Paradise is equally popular with the High Tatry. The caves which are more than 200 are the main sight of Slovak paradise. The most famous among them are protected by UNESCO. They are the Dobshinskaya Ice cave and also the longest in Slovakia (21 km) Stratenskaya cave. The first and the second ones are open for attendance.
Except for the High Tatry in Slovakia there are seven national parks: the Low Tatry, a Big and a Small Fatra, Poloniny, Pieniny, Muranska Palanina and Slovak Karst. They are all famous first of all for their picturesque landscapes. Moreover each of them is attractive in its own way. So, the Low Tatry are famous for their skiing resort Yasna, a Big Fatra will attract any lover of walking tourism and skiing (Skipark Ruzhemberok), there is a range of children’s camps in Poloniny, Muranska Planina is interesting by its canyons and ruins of ancient fortresses and Slovak Karst will offer an acquaintance with the castles Betlyar and the Red Hill.
