Bratislava Cultural Summer 2010

In summer, hardly a day goes by without an event taking place in Bratislava. The city’s summer atmosphere is continually renewed by its many events. Summer in Bratislava offers something for everyone, and its events inspire holidaymakers of all generations to look for holiday apartments or hotels in the city. Bratislava’s many sights add to the appeal: sacred and secular monuments either provide a stunning backdrop for summer events or, through their rich history, deepen visitors’ understanding of the city’s culture and art.

As it does every year, the Coronation Festival in Bratislava will bring the city’s event-packed summer to a close in September and usher in the autumn season. The Coronation Festival, held in Bratislava in early September, is generally considered the largest and perhaps the most beautiful event in all of Slovakia. For three days, Bratislava is transformed into a historical setting, recreating scenes from the 16th to the 19th century. Craftspeople and entertainers, along with around 150 other costumed performers and 200 traders showcasing traditional goods and crafts, draw several hundred thousand holidaymakers and visitors to the city each year. Medieval-inspired cuisine, transported into the modern era, completes the experience.

Before then, Bratislava’s Cultural Summer offers around 250 individual events. A summer holiday in the Czech Republic can only be enriched by the cultural success of Bratislava’s Cultural Summer. The programme includes the Bratislava Jazz Days, film festivals in Bratislava, the beer festival at the Incheba exhibition centre, and the city’s own summer celebration of art and culture. The opera and ballet performances of the Slovak National Theatre are also highly regarded, as are the internationally acclaimed concerts of the Slovak Philharmonic. Bratislava’s Cultural Summer brings together rock, classical music, traditional folk music, jazz, and many other performances and concerts. With its annual Watermen’s Festival, Bratislava joins the wider programme of events along the Danube. There is something for every taste at Bratislava’s Cultural Summer. Those with an interest in history will choose Devin. Devin Castle is already preparing for an event featuring historical fencing, music, dance, knightly games, and traditional crafts.

The hotter it gets in Bratislava, the more of the city’s many Cultural Summer events take place outdoors. Young talents, children’s groups, theatre companies, amateur performers, and professional artists will once again share the stages of Bratislava during the 2010 Cultural Summer.
