Novohrad Nógrád Geopark in Slovakia
The Novohrad Nógrád Geopark lies in southern Slovakia, in the Ipel tourist region, and extends north into Hungary. In terms of significance, the Novohrad Nógrád Geopark can hold its own not only alongside the national parks in Slovakia, but is also the only geopark in the world shared by two countries—in this case, Slovakia and Hungary. Novohrad is the Slovak name for the scenic region that begins a few kilometres east of the affordable hotels in Levice in Slovakia; in Hungary, the geopark is called Nógrád. The cross-border geopark in Slovakia and Hungary takes its name from Nógrád Castle in Hungary. Nógrád Castle is certainly the architectural highlight of the Novohrad Geopark; otherwise, the area is dominated by impressive landscapes and magnificent nature.

This week, the Novohrad Nógrád Geopark made positive headlines far beyond Slovakia and Hungary. At its latest meeting in France, the European Geoparks Network decided to admit the Novohrad Nógrád Geopark in Slovakia and Hungary with immediate effect, making it the 36th member of the continental network. The landscape that begins in southern Slovakia is set to receive another accolade in the coming days. UNESCO has announced that at its next meeting in Malaysia in mid-April, it will also include the Novohrad Nógrád region in Slovakia and Hungary in the UN organisation’s Global Geoparks Network.
In deciding to recognise the Novohrad Nógrád Geopark, both at European and global level, its unique geography between Slovakia and Hungary surely played a part, as did the beauty of this landscape, which invites visitors to holiday in Slovakia. Tourists and locals alike appreciate the remoteness and unspoilt nature of the Novohrad Nógrád Geopark in Slovakia and Hungary, which is why the landscape is also an important pillar of tourism in the region.
