Floods in Slovakia: along with other Central European countries, Slovakia has been dominated by the disaster. As a result of torrential rains that occurred in the region during the past few days, dozens of rivers across the country burst their banks. Today, virtually every region of the country - from the Bratislava region in the west to the Kosice region in the east - is among those affected by floods. There are also several victims of the nature.
The Slovak authorities hasten to declare their support for people affected by the raging floods. Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico during his visit to the flooded regions said that the Government would try to offset the effects of flooding.
The Slovak news agency tasr.sk quoted Fico, who during a trip to Nitra region stated that the Slovak authorities will prepare a package of special assistance, which will include essential foodstuffs, drinking water and hygiene items. Nitra region today is among the most affected. One of the toughest situations is near the town of Nove Zamki, where the river Zitawi flooded. From Hoole village located near the town were evacuated 150 people, from Shurany village - 200. Mass evacuation is carried out also in other villages in the vicinity of Nove Zamki.
The Slovak authorities point out that the property left behind during the evacuation will not suffer from looters. The villages that were evacuated are under the control of police of the country.
In elimination of consequences of floods in Slovakia to date are involved 265 soldiers of the Slovak Army, 3,000 more troops may soon be involved in the mission.
