Slovakia can be justifiably proud of not only its ski resorts and healing, but also historical heritage. Among the most unique attractions Red Stone Castle should be noted. The castle is located 7 km to the north-west of the village of Modra not far from ÄŒast.
First of all, thanks to Queen Constance, the wife of King Ottokara I, we can admire the Red kinds of stone. The contruction of new castle began to her order in 1230. The Turzo also made notable contributions in the erection of the castle.
Since 1497 the Castle belonged to the Fuggers. The famouse German artist Albrecht Dürer also took part in the developing the Red Castle draft. In the late 16th century the castle changed its owners again and became the property of the Palfies. And since then in the 17th century the strategic strengthening of the functions were no longer in demand, the interiors have become magically transformed by the influence of Italian artists. One the significant dates in the life of the castle is the nationalization of the castle that took place in 1945 and the beginning of being protected by the state since 1949.
The reason for the title of the castle is also very interesting. So, when the Fuggeries became the owners of the castle, they built two huge basement which length was 70 m and height was 9 m. These buildings were constructed along the trade route from Banská Bystrica in Europe and were extracted for storage products. But the conflicts with Turkey and the fighting that took place directly on the ground, not only prevented the application of cellars from the direct purpose, but also greatly undermined the economic situation of families. And the very cellars were given over to the storage of red stone, from which later the Castle was built. Nowadays the visitors are greatly interested in a collection of furniture and weapons inside the Castle.
The tourists arrived to the Red Stone are expected an exiting entertainment program. Every year in May “Crafts Fair” is arranged. In July the "Festival of historical fencing" is usually held and in August exciting "Knight Games" are also held. On any given day, except Mondays the Falcon's courtyard is also offered to visit.
In spring and summer tourists can see the largest collection of birds of prey in Slovakia.
It not difficult to get to the Red Stone Castle. Every day the bus from the main bus station in Bratislava and several times a day from Trnavy.
