The remarkable city of Liptovský Mikuláš is located in the north of Slovakia. It is situated right in the middle of Liptovska basin and next to the Low Tatra and the Western Chočské Mountains. The longest river Váh in Slovakia put its track through the mountains.
The first mention of the city dates back to the year 1286. The history of Liptovsky Mikulas is linked with the name of St. Mikuláš, the patron of the city and St. Mikuláš Church. Now not far from the Church the new fence rises instead of the surf wall that was built to Pongranets’s II order. Among the defensive units the special fortified ancestral farmstead takes the special place. There is Koloman Sokol’s Center who was a distinguished painter and graphic artist of the 20th century.
The historical events also took place in the Ileshgazi mansion. You can travel more than 700 years back to the history and see where Liptovsky Comitatus met. In the same building works the exposition of Mikuláš torture chamber that tells about the legendary robber Yuro Yanoshik and events of his time. opened a museum Yanka Kralya’s Museum is also opened here.
Not far from the city centre there is the largest synagogue in Slovakia. It was built in 1731, and after the fire in 1906 it has been amended. It recalls the events of the World War II because the bronze plaques with the names of 885 Jews deported from the city and later killed hang on it. Now the synagogue arranges exhibitions and cultural events. Art lovers should visit the Peter Mikhail Bohún Gallery - the second-largest art gallery in Slovakia. Here one will find Bohún works as well as the works of the Medieval art - Gothic, Baroque and art of the18th and 19th centuries. The Slovak Museum of Nature Conservation and speleology will help you to get to know the Slovak nature better. Thanks to numerous exhibits one can easily imagine what Slovak flora and fauna are like. Liptov Museum of hunting and fishing offers to know the history and development of hunting and fishing on Liptov. In the city centre the Metamorphoses fountain is built in honor of people who have contributed to the development of the city. In the vicinity of the city there are places for recreation and entertainment, too.
The cultural and sports life boils in Liptovský Mikuláš. The traditional for the city events bring the the special recovery into placid everyday life of the city: Mikuláš Fair and the Stolichny days, vseslovatsky contest pantomime PAN, the days of sheep cheese, Mosty Cultural Event, international water slalom competitions in Liptov, International Tatra Slalom. In Liptovsky Mikulas live and train some athletes who Slovakia can be proud of. Michal Martikan is the winner at the Olympics in Atlanta and Athens, Elena Kaliska, the winner at the Olympics in Athens, both represented Slovakia in water slalom discipline. The residents of the city also show a great interest to sports, too. For them and for guests of the city an indoor swimming pool, water park Tatralandia (in 2 km from the city), fitness centers, winter sports stadium, ski center at Podbreziny, tennis courts, squash centres are built.
