Trnava is 40 minutes trip from the capital of Slovakia Bratislava. It is situated near the small Carpathians and the Danube and is famous for its architecture and historical monuments. Trnava is an administrative centre with population of about 70000 people.
Oficially Trnava has been existing since 1211 when it was first mentioned in chronicles by the archbishop from Hungarian Estregom. In 1238 Trnava appeared to be under Magdeburgh Law and a little bit later one of the powerful fortresses in Central Europe was built there. In the Middle Ages it was the best example of the defence architecture of that time. In the southern part of Trnava there is a gothic cathedral of St. Helen.
There are eleven cathedrals in Trnava. One of them is the cathedral of St. Nickolai, the most famous building in Trnava. It was built in the 11th century. But it was later destroyed and now the tourists are shown the gothic variant which was rebuilt on the basis of the old one at the end of the 15th century. There are also the Church of Holy Trinity, the Church of St. Jacob and the University Church of St. Ian.
Trnava is famous as an educational centre. There is one of the first Universities in Trnava which was founded in 1935. One and a half centuries later it was moved to Budapest under the command of the Austrian emperror. But in 1992 a new University was opened in Trnava by the National Soviet of Slovakia.
In Slovakia Trnava is known as not only the cultural and historical centre. They consider Travna to be situated in abnormal zone where people can see Unknown Flying Objects (UFOs). It would be interesting for the agent Malder from the famous series “X- files” to visit this place. The scientists consider the Flying Objects to be connected with the location of the Atomic Electric Station. Anyhow, such legends attract tourists to Travna.
Anyway, whether you like travelling or you are fond of mysteries and puzzles, you will not be disappointed by your trip to Travna. The comfort of the place, the hospitality of its citizens and nice hotels (luxurious “Empire” and modern “Trnavana”) are really attractive for tourists.
