Winter holidays in Slovakia
People say of Slovakia’s ski regions that they are still very affordable compared with other ski regions in Europe and especially family-friendly. They also impress with excellent slopes and groomed cross-country trails. One thing is certain: Slovakia’s ski regions are catching up. With improved tourism strategies and the steady development of tourist infrastructure, Slovakia is gaining more and more reasons to enjoy a successful ski holiday at home that can rival those elsewhere.
Expectations for holiday apartments and holiday homes in Slovakia continue to rise. In recent years, the country has looked to Western standards for inspiration. This has led to the creation of unique ski hotels in Slovakia.

The best-known ski areas are in the “Low Tatras” National Park and the “High Tatras” National Park, with a few others in the Lesser Fatra and Greater Fatra. All four mountain ranges are in northern Slovakia. These mid-mountain ranges reach elevations of up to 2,000 metres. Only the “High Tatras” National Park can claim the title of “Europe’s smallest high mountain range”. This oldest national park in Slovakia is home to the country’s highest ski village, its longest and steepest run, and its highest mountain, Gerlachovský štít (2,655 m). The “High Tatras” ski pass provides access to around 18 km of slopes, groomed cross-country trails ranging from 2 to 20 km, and hiking routes among 25 mountains. The small town of Poprad is the “Gateway to the High Tatras”. Here you’ll find numerous holiday homes and apartments in Slovakia, welcoming guests especially in winter, but also in summer. Bachledova Dolina, Starý Smokovec and Ždiar are also typical ski villages. Lomnický štít, with its fantastic panorama at 2,632 m, and the holiday apartments in Tatranská Lomnica make this one of Slovakia’s most sought-after ski regions.
Jasná in the Low Tatras is a wonderful alternative. It boasts around 35 km of slopes, fun in the snow parks, and wildly varied runs on the north and south sides of Mount Chopok. Together with the Demänovská Valley, Jasná is considered one of Slovakia’s largest ski regions. With typical Slovak holiday homes in Liptovský Mikuláš and the region’s ice caves nearby, nothing stands in the way of a varied winter holiday in Slovakia. Alongside Maxiland for children, the snow park, opportunities for snowboarding and night sledding, Jasná is known as a Slovak ski region that hosts FIS competitions.
At elevations of up to 1,200 metres, the ski areas in the Lesser and Greater Fatra are relatively peaceful. They are ideal for beginners and families with children. The best-known resorts there include the Vrátna Valley, Veľká, Dolný Kubín, as well as Jasenská Dolina, Ružomberok and Donovaly.
