Discover Medzilaborce District

Medzilaborce on the Laborec below the Low Beskids

Medzilaborce District combines landscapes, cross-border routes and a clearly visible cultural character. The town of Medzilaborce lies at an elevation of 326 metres at the confluence of the Laborec and Vydraňka rivers, in the Laborec Highlands below the Low Beskids. Orientation therefore begins not with an interchangeable holiday landscape, but with a specifically shaped natural and cultural area in northeastern Slovakia.

Hiking and cycling on clearly defined routes

For a manageable hike, the KAMJANA educational trail is a good option. It is 3.4 kilometres long, takes about 1.5 hours and includes seven stations. The route begins at the Medzilaborce municipal office and ends at Čertov kameň. Its length, approximate duration and designated stations give you a clear idea of the format of this educational trail without equating it with a long mountain route.

Kalinov also offers different seasons and forms of activity: in summer, individual hiking and cycling are possible, while in winter, cross-country skiing is available. For longer cycling tours, the Carpathian Cycling Route runs from Čertižné via Habura and Medzilaborce onward to Ňagov, Čabalovce, Výrava, Svetlice, Snina and Ubľa. Another notable connection is the 170-kilometre Medzilaborce–Komancza cycling route, which crosses the border at Palota–Radoszyce. This makes it possible to view a short educational trail, regional cycling routes and a cross-border route as different forms of travel.

Natural surroundings and cross-border orientation

The Východné Karpaty Protected Landscape Area lies in northeastern Slovakia in the territory of Medzilaborce District and forms the surroundings of Poloniny National Park. The Palotská jedlina National Nature Reserve is located within this natural area. In the Východné Karpaty Protected Landscape Area, it belongs to Zone A with the fifth level of protection. This protection classification describes a particularly strictly delimited natural area and should be distinguished from the more general hiking opportunities in Medzilaborce.

Another cross-border connection is marked by the Lupkovský Tunnel. The 461-metre-long railway tunnel connects Medzilaborce with Poland, specifically with Starý Lupkow. After reconstruction in 1996, railway traffic through the tunnel resumed. For the region’s context, the tunnel shows how closely transport and landscape connections extend beyond today’s national border.

Ruthenian heritage, churches and museums

An unusual cultural destination is the mini open-air museum in Medzilaborce. It displays handmade replicas of Ruthenian houses from the surrounding villages. Visits are possible only accompanied by a staff member; this documented visiting arrangement is therefore part of the information to consider before visiting. Medzilaborce is also home to the Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit, built in 1949 in the Old Russian Renaissance style, and the Greek Catholic Church of Saint Basil the Great, built at the end of the 18th century in the Neoclassical style.

The Monastery of the Holy Spirit is located in nearby Krásny Brod. It is considered the oldest pilgrimage site of the present-day Greek Catholic Eparchy of Prešov and is one of the oldest and most significant monasteries in Slovakia. The Basilian monastery was destroyed three times over the course of its history and rebuilt each time. In Kalinov, a T-34 tank on a stone pedestal commemorates another historical theme as a symbol of the Soviet tank forces.

Medzilaborce is also home to a museum considered the first museum in Europe to bear Andy Warhol’s name. The Culture and Sports Festival also takes place in Medzilaborce in June. Together with the churches, the mini open-air museum and the monastery in Krásny Brod, this creates a cultural profile that connects clearly with the hiking, cycling and nature offerings of Medzilaborce District.
