VW Bratislava launches nonstop production
Slovakia’s car market is booming, which is also having a positive impact on the VW plant in the capital, Bratislava. In 2009 alone, VW generated revenue of €2.94 billion from its cars in Slovakia, bringing the Wolfsburg-based company a profit of €57 million in Bratislava. Forecasts for the current financial year point to similarly positive figures for the VW plant in Bratislava, if not an even better result. Due to strong demand for VW, Audi and Porsche models manufactured in Slovakia, Volkswagen AG decided some time ago to extend production in Bratislava to continuous, around-the-clock operation. Rather than starting as planned this Thursday, the assembly lines at the VW plant in Bratislava have already been running around the clock since Monday.

From now on, the VW Touareg and Audi Q7 models, as well as the Porsche Cayenne body, will be produced in four shifts at the VW plant in Bratislava. To ensure all shifts are fully staffed, Volkswagen announced that it would hire up to 1,000 new employees at its plant in Slovakia. Nonstop production at the VW plant in Bratislava is set to continue until at least mid-2011 and may be extended even longer if necessary. A company spokesperson said that the new employees are expected to start work in Slovakia over the coming weeks; until then, the existing workforce will cover the fourth shift.
Factory tours at VW are also available in Slovakia, of course. They can be booked directly with the relevant local providers or arranged through some Bratislava hotels. Many tourists take the opportunity to visit the VW plant as part of a city break in Bratislava or a holiday in Slovakia.
