In the north-west part of Slovakia, almost in the heart of Mala Fatra mountain massif is located a little village of Terchova, which is famous all over the country for its natural beauty, history and national holidays. Here, on the last Saturday of May will take place one of these holidays with grandiose name – “Cooking and eating sheep cheese dumpling world championship”.
The fact is that sheep cheese dumplings is a national dish of Slovakia, and is an integral part of culture, like spaghetti in Italy, or goulash in Hungary. Sheep cheese dumplings are potato pastries with fried bacon seasoned with soft cheese. Different versions of this dish are offered in almost every restaurant or cafe in Slovakia. This dish is so popular in the country that the fact of organizing the "World championship" does not seem to be something special. On the day of the holiday the whole Terchova turns into a big fun fair, where tourists can get acquainted with national traditions and history of the mountainous region. And, of course, see the culinary competition. Usually it takes place in three stages: the best recipe and quick cooking of dumplings, the most unusual recipe, and, finally, who will eat faster than anyone quite an impressive portion of sheep cheese dumplings. Despite the playful nature of the holiday, in Terchova constantly come chefs not only from Slovakia, but also neighboring countries to learn new recipes. The festival also includes performances of folk bands, artistic needlework contest and tasting of local home wines.
By the way, Terchova is home to the Slovak national hero Juraj Jánošík (local equivalent of Robin Hood).
